Samsung brings in Silicon Valley expert to make Bixby relevant

The AI assistant Bixby hasn't proven to be the consumer hit Samsung had hoped for and now the company is taking big steps to try and change that. Samsung has tweaked its personnel arrangement, bringing in expert Eui-suk Chung from Silicon Valley to work alongside its mobile division research lead Injong Rhee. Rhee will retain his role at the company, though.

Galaxy S8 has a missing text messages problem

Galaxy S8 has a missing text messages problem

Is every new Samsung flagship cursed to have a major fiasco? While not as explosive, pun totally intended, as the Galaxy Note 7, it seems that something is amiss with the otherwise commendable Galaxy S8 and S8+. Owners across different carriers in the US are reporting cases of "missing" text messages. On the one hand, it's unlikely to cause physical harm (unless you violently hurl the phone at someone). But, on the other hand, the bug is a serious issue for concern, especially when emergency cases are involved.

Samsung making more from iPhone X than their own Galaxy

Samsung making more from iPhone X than their own Galaxy

Apple's iPhone X is expected to bring Samsung more earnings in its first 20 months on sale than their own Galaxy smartphones. This is according to analyst group Counterpoint, who suggest that Apple will sell approximately 130 million iPhone X units by the summer of 2019, earning Samsung one whole heck of a lot of cash from OLED manufacturing. Initial analysis suggests that Samsung Display makes $110 per iPhone X unit made.

iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 face off in a blender

iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 face off in a blender

Most, but definitely not all, of the smartphone torture durability tests you see on YouTube are meant to mentally prepare users for the fate that awaits them should they accidentally drop, or scratch, or burn, their precious device. But how often do you accidentally drop your phone inside the swirling metal mass of death known as a blander? Probably never, hopefully. But in case you do, by happenstance, misplace an iPhone 8 or a Galaxy S8 inside one, now you will know which one will last just a few spins longer.

DIY DeX Laptop turns MacBook Pro into portable DeX Station

DIY DeX Laptop turns MacBook Pro into portable DeX Station

Samsung DeX shows a lot of promise, but half of that promise is rendered useless by the one essential part of that formula: the DeX Station. The idea of using your Galaxy smartphone as your computer is great if your idea of computing is being tethered to your desk all the time. Good luck if you actually want to be productive elsewhere. That is why XDA Junior Member kreal started a DIY project that gutted the insides of a MacBook Pro and turned it into a DeX Laptop.

Galaxy S9’s camera likely a speed-master for slo-mo

Galaxy S9’s camera likely a speed-master for slo-mo

The Galaxy S9 may be the first major device to benefit from a Samsung image sensor revealed in the rumor mill this week. The 3-layer image processing unit is tipped to use a method of capture not entirely unlike the 3-layer image sensor released this year by Sony. If the past is any indicator, it would not be a surprise to see Samsung employ this new image processor in some models, while Sony's equivalent IMX image processor lives in others.

Galaxy Note 8 preorder sales beat 7 (so far)

Galaxy Note 8 preorder sales beat 7 (so far)

As of the publication of this article, Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 has out-sold every Galaxy Note smartphone before it. Over this same period of time (since announcement), more people have pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 than any other smartphone in the Galaxy Note lineup. This is a relief, I'm sure, to those at Samsung worried that last year's Galaxy Note 7 fiasco would dent the line's future sales.

The Bixby button is the bane of my mobile existence

The Bixby button is the bane of my mobile existence

Samsung made a controversial decision with its flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones: to include a physical button for summoning Bixby, the personal assistant that wasn't finished upon the handsets' launch. Some people were okay with the button's existence when the option (briefly and unofficially) existed to remap it. Samsung squashed that ability, though, and now we're left with a button that is, for many of us, really annoying and completely useless.

Note 8 vs Galaxy S8+ : Which phablet to buy

Note 8 vs Galaxy S8+ : Which phablet to buy

Samsung's flagships have always been related, but with the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy S8+ the familial resemblance is closer than ever. The brand new Note 8 might have phablet fans salivating, but line it up against the three month old Galaxy S8+ and you could be forgiven for struggling to see the differences. That might mean big savings at the cash register if you don't need what the Note 8 is doing differently.

Samsung Bixby expands globally, still speaks only 2 languages

Samsung Bixby expands globally, still speaks only 2 languages

Bixby is both the highlight of Samsung year and also its biggest disappointment. Bixby Voice, the only part of Bixby that does matter, came late and was underwhelming. To be fair, it was a completely new venture for Samsung and a company exec admits it didn’t have the necessary big data for it. And to its credit, Samsung has been consistent in pushing and improving Bixby, which it is now pushing to over 200 countries around the world, allowing anyone with a compatible device to speak with Bixby. Presuming they can fluently speak US English or Korean.

Pink Galaxy S8 could shake things up soon

Pink Galaxy S8 could shake things up soon

The Galaxy S8 already has a fair number of color variants on offer, but one that isn't included on that list is rose pink. Samsung has only revealed Rose Pink as a variant for the Galaxy S8 Plus, but now that may all be changing. Apparently a standard Galaxy S8 in pink is on the way to some regions in eastern Europe.
