Galaxy Tab S4 reviews put the nail on Android tablet’s coffin

Galaxy Tab S4 reviews put the nail on Android tablet’s coffin

Samsung isn’t having a good year, especially after its Galaxy S9 and S9+ are turning out to be duds in the market. It is, to some extent, rushing to plug up the holes of its ship with the Galaxy Note 9 later this day, a Galaxy Watch perhaps later this month, and, of course, the already announced Galaxy Tab S4. That last bit is supposed to be the Android tablet to take on Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But if so, then Samsung is in bigger trouble than it might have presumed based on the early reviews of the slate that’s supposedly meant to replace your laptop.

Galaxy Note 9 may replace your PC with just a USB-C cord

Galaxy Note 9 may replace your PC with just a USB-C cord

There's a feature in the Samsung Galaxy S9, most recently, which allows Samsung phones to be their own miniature PC replacements. It's called DeX, aka Dockless Desktop, and it's actually pretty neat. It wasn't perfect the last time we took a closer look at it*, but it was certainly on the right track. Now, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, there's a real possibility that DeX will become a whole lot easier to get into right out the box.

Galaxy S8 Oreo fourth beta arrives with bad news for DeX

Galaxy S8 Oreo fourth beta arrives with bad news for DeX

As unofficially hinted by a Samsung customer representative, a fourth beta for Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ has officially arrived. While it still doesn’t clue us in on when the final, non-beta version will roll out to all users, it at least gives hope that things aren’t stalled on Samsung’s end. Indeed, the list of fixes hints that the OEM has been rather busy plugging up holes in its ship. Sadly, the beta also has its share of bad news, particularly for those using third-party DeX docks that suddenly find themselves blocked off from using Samsung’s Android desktop UI.

Galaxy Note 8 and Dex – one month later: I almost ditched my PC

Galaxy Note 8 and Dex – one month later: I almost ditched my PC

I will confess. I am one of those who have been mesmerized by the likes of Microsoft's continuum, Ubuntu's Convergence, and all the other attempts at utilizing the computer in your pocket as your only, or at least primary, computer on your desk. So when Samsung came out with the oddly-named DeX and the promise of another “PC in your pocket” experience, I was naturally intrigued. Did Samsung succeed where many others have failed? Just a week of use might not be enough to truly judge that proposition, so I decided to do one better. I used the Galaxy Note 8 and the Samsung DeX exclusively for a month, for both work and play. This is how my adventure went.

Samsung DeX Linux on Galaxy really wants you to ditch your PC

Samsung DeX Linux on Galaxy really wants you to ditch your PC

There is no shortage of phones, platforms, and tools that promise the ability to use only your smartphone as your day to day computing device. Almost all of them, however, fall short when it comes to a few use cases, especially those related to multimedia work and software development. Samsung DeX is the latest such attempt and comes close to that dream. Soon, it will be taking one step closer with its upcoming Linux on Galaxy app that delivers a Linux environment of your choice right on your phone and, of course, on your makeshift desktop.

Huawei Mate 10 rumored to have Samsung DeX-like feature

Huawei Mate 10 rumored to have Samsung DeX-like feature

Samsung may have just revived the "Phone as your PC" idea with its DeX platform and it seems to have inspired another OEM to follow suit. Whispers are going around that Huawei, who now ranks as one of the world's top three smartphone makers (depending on which market analyst you ask) is reportedly planning on a similar feature that will turn the upcoming Huawei Mate 10 into a PC desktop when connected to some peripherals. The difference, however, might be that, unlike Samsung DeX, Huawei's implementation might work with other docks and connectors as well.
