Samsung Linux on DeX beta hands-on: do almost everything on your phone

Samsung Linux on DeX beta hands-on: do almost everything on your phone

Google seems to be pushing Chrome OS as the one platform to rule them all. Samsung now seems to be singing a slightly different tune, but one that, unsurprisingly requires buying and playing its instruments. After promising and teasing it last year, Samsung has finally started the beta of its Linux on DeX experience to the interested few that own a Galaxy Note 9 or a Galaxy Tab S4. Even while still in beta form, the experience is already impressive and can really let you get almost anything accomplished just using your phone with one important and very obvious caveat. You have to be comfortable using Linux.

Samsung DeX Linux beta is coming: here’s how it works

Samsung DeX Linux beta is coming: here’s how it works

It has been more than a year since Samsung first teased the possibility of running a fully-supported full Linux (Ubuntu really) desktop on a Galaxy smartphone. Considering Samsung’s almost Google-like tendencies, it was perhaps considered DOA. At SDC this year, however, the company is making some noise to prove that Linux on DeX is very much alive and, in fact, will start its beta testing phase next week. But before us Linux geeks all get giddy, here is the fine print of what this upcoming power user feature will entail.

Galaxy Note 9 Samsung DeX Review: Limited freedom

Galaxy Note 9 Samsung DeX Review: Limited freedom

By now, Samsung DeX is almost two years old. For a very niche feature that comes from a company that has a tendency to abandon niche features, that’s quite that’s quite an achievement. But Samsung is hardly the only one in this phone-as-a-desktop department and it was actually behind in some aspects. With Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Note 9 as well as the Galaxy Tab S4, Samsung has finally stepped up to the challenge. But how much did it improve and has it improved enough to be something users will actually buy Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S phones for? We take it for a spin to find out.

Galaxy S9 Android Pie to bring dock-less Samsung DeX

Galaxy S9 Android Pie to bring dock-less Samsung DeX

It seems that some Pie won’t be the only sweet thing that the next Android update will bring to Samsung’s early 2018 flagships. Even if the Galaxy Note 9 launched with the same Android 8.1 Oreo version, the latter smartphone runs a more recent version of Samsung’s custom Experience and, as such, had a few exclusive perks. But according to the latest leaks of the upcoming beta, the Galaxy S9 will soon be on equal footing, getting features like a Samsung DeX that needs no docks.

Samsung DeX might go wireless in the near future

Samsung DeX might go wireless in the near future

With the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung proved, at least for now, that its DeX strategy isn't just a one-off thing, unlike, say, Microsoft's Continuum. It made it possible to activate DeX without the DeX Station or Dock, just any regular USB-C to HDMI dongle. While convenient, that still misses out on the ultimate convenience: a wireless connection. The good news is that Samsung is apparently working on it already. The bad news? We don't know when.

Galaxy Tab S4 reviews put the nail on Android tablet’s coffin

Galaxy Tab S4 reviews put the nail on Android tablet’s coffin

Samsung isn’t having a good year, especially after its Galaxy S9 and S9+ are turning out to be duds in the market. It is, to some extent, rushing to plug up the holes of its ship with the Galaxy Note 9 later this day, a Galaxy Watch perhaps later this month, and, of course, the already announced Galaxy Tab S4. That last bit is supposed to be the Android tablet to take on Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But if so, then Samsung is in bigger trouble than it might have presumed based on the early reviews of the slate that’s supposedly meant to replace your laptop.

Galaxy Note 9 may replace your PC with just a USB-C cord

Galaxy Note 9 may replace your PC with just a USB-C cord

There's a feature in the Samsung Galaxy S9, most recently, which allows Samsung phones to be their own miniature PC replacements. It's called DeX, aka Dockless Desktop, and it's actually pretty neat. It wasn't perfect the last time we took a closer look at it*, but it was certainly on the right track. Now, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, there's a real possibility that DeX will become a whole lot easier to get into right out the box.

Galaxy S8 Oreo fourth beta arrives with bad news for DeX

Galaxy S8 Oreo fourth beta arrives with bad news for DeX

As unofficially hinted by a Samsung customer representative, a fourth beta for Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ has officially arrived. While it still doesn’t clue us in on when the final, non-beta version will roll out to all users, it at least gives hope that things aren’t stalled on Samsung’s end. Indeed, the list of fixes hints that the OEM has been rather busy plugging up holes in its ship. Sadly, the beta also has its share of bad news, particularly for those using third-party DeX docks that suddenly find themselves blocked off from using Samsung’s Android desktop UI.

Galaxy S9 DeX dock gets a new name for an exciting feature

With 2018 quickly coming up, it's nearly time to start looking forward to the reveals of various spring flagship phones. One such phone is the Galaxy S9 (and its expected big brother, the Galaxy S9+), and recent rumors tell us that the launch of those phones could be coming as soon as January. They may not be alone, either, as we're now hearing that Samsung will have a new DeX dock to go along with them.
