Drone racing hasn't quite yet set the world of sports entertainment on fire, but that doesn't mean it hasn't found an audience or that there aren't impressive feats on display. Case in point: the Drone Racing League (DRL), which uses a specific quadcopter design that all competing teams use, has engineered a model that reached a flight speed of 179.6mph, in turn setting a Guinness World Record.
While Faraday Future's — errr, future — remains in question, what with the fleeing executives and uncertain unveilings at CES, the company's all-electric FF91 prototype not only made it to the top of the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado earlier this week, but it set a new record time for its vehicle class. This marks one of the first times the FF91 has been seen in a real-world, uncontrolled environment, and making it the 12.4-mile, 156-turn Pikes Peak course was certainly a challenge.
We already know 3D printing is poised to revolutionized the manufacturing industry, and the technology has already been used to produce mechanical parts for everything from watches to bikes to motorcycles. But McLaren's Formula 1 racing team has come up with the idea to use it to make spare parts where they're most needed: trackside in the pit.
Take the super-exclusive Ford GT, trim what little fat you might be able to find, and you end up with this: the Ford GT Competition Series. Few would describe Ford's supercar as anything close to being obese, but the automaker is giving the coupe every edge it can when it comes to track performance. That includes ditching the creature comforts, but it's only the start.
This weekend, at the Formula E racing series Buenos Aires ePrix event, the organizers behind Roborace held their first on-track test between two specially-designed electric self-driving cars. While not quite as exciting as a race between human drivers, the cars, known as DevBots, still managed to reach speeds as high as 115mph. But as is often the case during tests like this, an accident did occur when one of the cars crashed while navigating a turn.

The racers will be fielded in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar championship series.
Professional racing leagues are rapidly turning to electric cars: there's already Formula E, based on the F1 series, and the upcoming Electric GT World Series, which will use the Tesla Model S sedan. Now it seems time for Rallycross to get in on the action. Red Bull has announced that its Global Rallycross series will feature an EV racing class starting in 2018.
The third season of the FIA Formula E championship is set to start next month, but this 2016-17 already has a few historic and exciting firsts, particularly for the US. Although the last season did have a round in the US at Long Beach, this season is the first time a FIA-approved open-wheel, not to mention a fully-electric, race will take place within the five boroughs of New York City. And marking that momentous occasion will be Jaguar North America, whose return to the motorsports world will be witnessed first at this very Formula E season.
