TomTom for iPhone 3G and 3GS on sale now

The TomTom app for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS has gone on sale [iTunes link] through the App Store, with versions for the US and Canada, UK and Ireland, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand all available to download.  Prices range from around $74 for the Australian mapping to $132 for the Western Europe setup; that doesn’t include the nifty in-car dock which has a separate GPS receiver and hands-free kit integrated.

Becker Z205 PND gets 3D landscapes [Video]

Becker have unveiled their latest personal navigation device, the Z205, and while it may not look all that impressive it does have some nifty functionality.  Packed inside the 125 x 82.5 x 12.7 mm case there's a 4.3-inch touchscreen along with a TMC Pro traffic data receiver module, Bluetooth and 4GB of storage.

Waze iPhone GPS app uses crowd-sourcing for real time traffic

Real-time crowd-sourcing navigation app Waze has cleared Apple's App Store approval team and appeared for download, promising not only free turn-by-turn directions but peer-based traffic and road-condition updates.  Waze relies on GPS and cell-tower triangulation from other users to determine traffic flow, with server-side processing of the best route for you to take.

TomTom iPhone kit priced in UK

From one iPhone PND app to another: details of TomTom’s upcoming iPhone cradle and its pricing have emerged, courtesy of a premature listing on Handtec’s site.  The accessory – first announced back at Apple’s WWDC in June – includes not only a windscreen mount but a charger, amplified speakers, hands-free kit and separate GPS dongle.

CoPilot Live PND app for iPhone released in UK: one-off charge, no subscriptions

CoPilot have released their CoPilot Live navigation app for the iPhone, and unlike rival apps which require monthly subscriptions, it's available for a one-off cost of £25.99 ($44).  CoPilot Live includes landscape and portrait orientation modes, turn-by-turn directions, auto route-recalculation and 3D mapping, together with voice prompts.

A new Garmin PND , the nuvi 1690, has passed through the FCC [pdf link], and it seems to have learned some connectivity tricks from its nuvifone cousins.  The nuvi 1690 includes not only Bluetooth but GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, presumably offering real-time traffic downloads among other things.

When you call your company M&Soft, we can’t help but wonder whether you’re looking to borrow a little big-player luster from Microsoft; however the Korean firm could feasibly stand on its own feet by making PND units with displays almost bigger than your car’s windshield.  The M&Soft Mappy API may have a ridiculous name, but inside it’s a different story: as well as the SiRF v6 chipset there’s DMB digital TV and media playback.

Hyundai PROVIA A7+ PND: 7″ touchscreen, T-DMB and PIP

For a moment there, the UK was almost ahead: Mio's Navman Spirit TV PNDs wowed and impressed with their blend of GPS navigation and digital TV, only to be blown out of the proverbial water by Korean firm Hyundai Telematics.  Their new PROVIA A7+ PND takes the Navman Spirit TV and uses that as a mere kicking-off point, stuffing in simultaneous T-DMB digital TV and TPEG road status reception and more.

Magellan Maestro 4700 PND navigates onto shelves

Magellan have officially launched their latest PND, the Maestro 4700, a little over a month since it was spotted clearing the FCC.  The 4700 has a 4.7-inch touchscreen together with voice command and Bluetooth with a noise-canceling microphone.

AT&T Navigator for iPhone released: functional but expensive

AT&T have released the iPhone version of their Navigator PND program through the App Store [iTunes link], offering turn-by-turn directions on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.  The Telenav-developed app supports both verbal and on-screen guidance, speech recognition, traffic alerts and full 3D mapping.
