Nokia 8 won’t get Android 8.0 Treble feature, HMD says why

Aside from a few major UI changes, much of Android Oreo’s improvements happened under the hood, from the way it handled apps running in the background to how fast it booted up. One of the most invisible of those is the so-called Project Treble, which promises to make future software updates faster and more seamless. Unfortunately, that’s not something that all phones upgrading to Android 8.0 will get, even the “pure” Nokia 8. HMD Global Chief Product Officer, now practically the public face of its Nokia smartphones, took to Twitter to explain why that is so.

Android Oreo galore: Nokia 8, Xperia XZs, unlocked HTC U11, betas

Android Oreo has been out for months now but, naturally, most OEMs haven’t been quick to jump into it. But they do say “better late than never” and, to be fair, it isn’t exactly that late yet anyway. As if scheduled to coincide with Thanksgiving, some manufacturers have gotten the ball rolling on Android 8.0 Oreo (sadly not 8.1) for some models. Some have even started the beta test for other devices, or at least promised them to come really soon.

Nokia 8 is going to be a chore to open up for repairs

Nokia 8 is going to be a chore to open up for repairs

Nokia phones are quite known and notorious for their durability, but that was back in the days of plastic and rubber. With glass and metal wrapped around today’s smartphones, it’s good to see that even Nokia’s premium flagship so far, the Nokia 8, is a solid runner. But durability doesn’t exactly equate to repairability and, in fact, is sometimes the opposite. But while the Nokia 8 does score some points in the latter, it’s not going to be an easy journey inside.

Nokia 8 Android Oreo beta open to public, Nokia 3, 5, 6 coming

When the Nokia brand rose from the ashes of its unfortunate fate under Microsoft, it, together with HMD Global, promised one thing that many Android OEMs make but few deliver: quick Android updates. And not just the monthly security updates, mind, but also the big ones. So far, there has been only one major Android update since Nokia launched its handsets, Android 8.0 Oreo. And, so far, it hasn’t yet rolled that out. The winds of change are blowing, however as Nokia opens up its new Beta Labs program, bringing with it Android Oreo for the Nokia 8.

Nokia 8 happily continues the brand’s rugged legacy

Nokia was popular and, at the same time, notorious for its smartphones that were veritable bricks you can sometimes throw at would be assailants. That was, however, in the distant past, when phones were less smart and less fragile. With the return of the brand to the smartphone market, sans Microsoft, each model seems to be met with the same question: will it bend? Of course, JerryRigEverything just had to put the new Nokia 8 to the test to see if it is indeed Nokia's most powerful, both in specs and in form.

Nokia 8 at FCC is better than expected

Nokia 8 at FCC is better than expected

The Nokia 8 is technically Nokia’s first true flagship model, bearing specs high enough to compete with some of this year’s top contenders. But when Nokia said last month that it won’t be bringing the Nokia 8 that it just launched to US and Chinese markets, there was a bit of head scratching involved. What it really meant to say was that it wasn’t bringing that Nokia 8 model to the US. Which is all good, because the Nokia 8 that just hit the FCC is suggesting that the US, and China, will be getting a better deal.

Nokia 8 Bothies aren’t the camera gimmick we wanted

Selfies are mundane and so Nokia is hoping to shake things up with a camera feature it has dubbed 'bothies.' If you pronounced that in your head as 'bah-these,' you're not the only one, but that's not what Nokia is going for. Pronounced 'both-eez,' the name refers to recording/shooting with both of a phone's cameras at the same time, combining the content into a single photo or videos.
