Minecraft on the Wii U: Too little too late

Minecraft on the Wii U: Too little too late

Minecraft is the sort of game that we'll only see once in a lifetime. It was originally created by a single guy, and has gone on to be the single best-selling PC game of all time. In fact, it very well could overthrow Tetris and Wii Sports as the best-selling video game of all time. The game has been sold on nearly every imaginable platform, except the one that makes the most sense (besides the PC). Today, it was announced that the game would finally be coming to the Wii U.

Nintendo: focus is on IP not mobile, NX will be very different

Nintendo: focus is on IP not mobile, NX will be very different

Although it seems that the sleeping dragon that is Nintendo has started to rouse from its deep hibernation, perhaps it is wise to still rein in expectations and throttle down the excitement. Newly minted company president Tatsumi Kimishima sat down with TIME Magazine to reveal as much as he could about his plans for Nintendo. And there might be some disappointment for those wishing Nintendo would make a stronger stance on mobile. The good news? Kimishima is at least promising that the Nintendo NX console will be very different from the much criticized Wii platform.

Fan recreates Mega Man 1 in Super Mario Maker

When Nintendo released Super Mario Maker, it was the first time that the masses could easily create their own levels for the intrepid plumber. Sure, there were ways to do it involving an emulator, but this method is far easier. So once it was released into the wild, many people set out to make crazy difficult stages that took many attempts to pass. But one person decided that this was the perfect opportunity for a Mega Man crossover.

Nintendo Account finally does away with friend codes

Nintendo Account finally does away with friend codes

Nintendo has a love-hate relationship with the future. In the last two generations of consoles, Nintendo was a big innovator. The Wii brought us motion controls, and the Wii U brought us a tablet input for a home system. And that's not to even mention what they've done for the world of handheld gaming. Through all of these innovations, Nintendo has been lightyears behind when it comes to playing with your friends online. But that will finally be changing.

Nintendo taps Facebook to kickstart Mario Maker hype

With the game, or rather game maker, delayed for nearly half a year, Nintendo really better make sure that Mario Maker will hit all the right PR notes when it does. And who better to know how to do that than the very people behind one of the world's greatest hype machines, Facebook. For two days next week, Facebook employees will have the exclusive privilege of doing something that many game designers and developers past could only dream of: creating officially sanction, accepted, and even distributed Super Mario levels.

Wii U demise might come sooner, 5 mobile games scheduled

Perhaps there is very little doubt in anyone's mind that the Wii U is on its way out, especially after Nintendo confirmed the existence of its NX successor. But the ball might actually be rolling sooner than most of us have presumed. Considering Nintendo's notoriety as a slow moving dinosaur, it is almost unfathomable that Nintendo would be putting the axe to its somewhat failed attempt at a current gen console. According to WIRED, however, the signs are quite strong. And perhaps more importantly, rapid change might exactly be what the doctor prescribed.

Star Fox Zero Gameplay trailer summons fond N64 memories

Star Fox Zero Gameplay trailer summons fond N64 memories

This week the folks at Nintendo have revealed Star Fox Zero, releasing a gameplay trailer to make with the excitement. This is similar to what we saw teased in very, very early form last year at E3 making use of the Gamepad's second screen option. Here you're able to use the main screen as a 3rd-person view and the gamepad as your first-person screen. We've yet to see any other game make use of a double-screen in this way. It's radical.

Nintendo’s Amiibo cross over to Skylanders

This week Nintendo crossed a barrier - they've announced Amiibo for Skylanders. These Amiibo will be cross-platform functional - cross-game, that is to say, don't cross your fingers for Amiibo working outside of the Nintendo hardware universe just yet. These characters work with Amiibo abilities as they always would, but also working in the new game Skylanders SuperChargers. The first Amiibos introduced this way are Donkey Kong and Bowzer. These new characters will take on new abilities and forms - and they'll have their own special vehicles usable in the Skylanders universe, too.
