Minecraft hits the 100 million sales milestone

Minecraft hits the 100 million sales milestone

Do you play Minecraft? You’re certainly not alone if you do. According to Mojang, the company has sold an average of 53,000 copies of Minecraft everyday so far in 2016, and it has officially reached (and exceeded) the 100 million sales milestone since first launching. To help put that massive number in perspective, Mojang says that if you were to take everyone who has purchased Minecraft and put them together in the same country, it would be the 12th most populous nation in the world.

Minecraft cracks down on brand promos (by banning them)

Minecraft maker Mojang has banned servers and mods that exist only to promote a product that is unrelated to Minecraft itself. In a statement today, Mojang’s Owen Hill said that the existence of such promos “doesn’t feel right, or more importantly, fun.” As such, Mojang has updated its Commercial Usage Guidelines with a new section, doing so while reassuring users that it won’t “affect the usual server and video monetization.”

Minecraft gets Hunger Games-style Battle mode

Minecraft gets Hunger Games-style Battle mode

Minecraft started out as such a simple game. You'd spawn into a world, and you'd need to find resources to build a shelter to ride out the night in. Then you'd work on building bigger and better structures until you got tired of it. These days, there's more to do than any of us could have imagined back when the game was originally released in alpha, back in 2010.

Well, at the time, it was hinted that Nintendo fans would be getting some special content in the game. After the initial hinting, we didn't really hear anything else about their future plans. How to Activate Minecraft online for Android

This morning the folks at Mojang have activated Minecraft Realms on Android - in Alpha mode. That means it's probably going to be broken when you play it - but you get to play it early! Minecraft on mobile will soon get command blocks, mods

Minecraft on mobile will soon get command blocks, mods

Minecraft is popular, perhaps even notorious, for all the expressions of creativity and man hours lost in its open-ended, blocky, digital world. It is, however, perhaps a little known secret that that isn't the case for all versions of Minecraft. The original PC, not Windows 10, version of the game holds all those promises, but the mobile "Pocket Edition" and Windows 10 edition, which is a lot like the mobile edition, are a lot less capable. The wheels of change are turning, however, and soon those two versions will also be just as powerful.

Minecraft is really coming to the Gear VR, date still unknown

Whispers about this has already been circulating for a few months or so, but now Microsoft is finally confirming the rumors, at least according to a spokesperson. At GDC 2016, the new owner of Minecraft will be announcing that Minecraft is indeed coming to the Samsung Gear VR in addition to the Oculus Rift. Considering both VR headsets have Oculus' mark on them, it isn't that much of a surprise but still a very welcome confirmation. Details are still slim nonetheless, leaving just enough room for speculation and wishes.

Microsoft’s Project AIX uses Minecraft for AI research

Microsoft’s Project AIX uses Minecraft for AI research

Games and artificial intelligence have always gone hand in hand. AI has permeated all kinds of non-trivial games, even going as far back as the original Pac-man arcade game. Now, computer scientists are turning the tables around, sort of. More and more researchers are actually using games to fuel and aid artificial intelligence research, most of the time by beating the game. But Project AIX from Microsoft Research is doing something different with Minecraft. It is using the open, world building game to let an AI learn how to climb a mountain. Without falling into a pool of lava.
