Chuwi SurBook Review

Chuwi SurBook Review

Not too long ago, Microsoft was rumored to be close to retiring the Surface Pro line of 2-in-1 tablets. Although the company denied it, it hasn’t exactly given hard evidence to the contrary either. Fortunately, the basic idea of a Windows tablet that also functions as a laptop as well as a digital canvas has become so popular that OEMs are more than happy to continue its legacy, from giants like HP and Dell to upstarts like Chuwi. The company has just recently shipped the Chuwi SurBook, the product of a very successful Indiegogo run, and we take a hard look at how this Surface Pro-alike fares in the real world.

Surface Pro with LTE Advanced is here, for business customers

Surface Pro with LTE Advanced is here, for business customers

The Surface line of 2-in-1 tablets have changed over the years, but two things have remained constant: it’s hinge design and its lack of cellular connectivity. One of those changes today as Microsoft finally announces the launch of is long-awaited LTE-enabled Surface Pro model. In fact, it actually comes with LTE Advanced, a.k.a. LTE-A. But before you go scrambling for your credit card, you should probably know two things. One, it won’t be available until December. Two, Microsoft is aiming it at its business customers only for now.

Surface Pro LTE models are coming in December

Surface Pro LTE models are coming in December

It's no Surface Pro 5 but, given the changes Microsoft has made, it could have very well be called one. But perhaps one of the most significant changes made to Redmond's premium 2-in-1 device is the addition of built-in LTE connectivity. That, however, was four months ago and, save for a premature preorder listing, there was nary a word about it. At Ignite 2017 this week, a company spokesperson semi-officially confirmed at least a launch date, which will take place right at the start of December.

New Surface Pro LTE goes on pre-order in UK ahead of reveal

Sometimes, people are just too eager to get the ball rolling, especially on a good thing. Sometimes that leads to accidentally published specs, but, this time, some UK retailers have taken the excitement even further. One of them have actually put up pre-order pages for models of the new not-5 Surface Pro 2-in-1s with built-in cellular connectivity, complete with specs. All before Microsoft actually announces them, officially, in a special Surface event next month.

This leaked memo just made Microsoft vs Consumer Reports fascinating

This leaked memo just made Microsoft vs Consumer Reports fascinating

Microsoft's war over Surface reliability with Consumer Reports has taken another unexpected turn, with leaks suggesting a combination of ambition and inexperience led to higher than expected return rates. The two companies came head to head last week, after Consumer Reports took the unexpected decision to strip Microsoft's Surface Book and Surface Laptop of their "recommended" ratings, in addition to warning buyers off the Surface Pro 4. That was down to the worrying results of a survey which suggested Microsoft's laptops and tablets were the least reliable in the industry.

Microsoft fires back at Consumer Reports’ Surface slight

Microsoft fires back at Consumer Reports’ Surface slight

Microsoft has pushed back at Consumer Reports' decision to strip the Surface range of its "recommended" award, arguing that its actual reliability is much better than was claimed. Consumer Reports had previously granted both the Surface Laptop and the Surface Book its coveted recommendation, based on factors such as performance and design. However, it backtracked after surveys of existing Surface owners reported significantly higher problems with their laptops and tablets compared to the rest of the industry.

Microsoft Surface vs Consumer Reports: What you need to know

Microsoft Surface vs Consumer Reports: What you need to know

Microsoft might be reconsidering its Consumer Reports subscription today, with the news that the Surface Laptop and Surface Book have both been stripped of their "recommended" status. Concerns about reliability of the Surface line-up as a whole have prompted the review organization to backtrack on its awards, in addition to suggesting that the Surface Pro shouldn't be among your top considerations for a 2-in-1 hybrid, either. Microsoft is suitably outraged, as you'd expect, and indeed there are some big questions around just what Consumer Reports is testing and how they're doing that.

Consumer Reports just un-recommended Microsoft’s Surface range

Consumer Reports has withdrawn its recommendations for Microsoft's Surface laptop and 2-in-1 range, citing concerns about reliability after polling owners. The decision particularly impacts the latest Microsoft Surface Laptop and the Surface Book, which the reviews organization had initially awarded its coveted "recommended" designation. However, Consumer Reports says it also applies to the Surface Pro released earlier in the year.

Surface Pro Review 2017

Surface Pro Review 2017

The Surface Pro Review we have here passes judgement on the Surface Pro released in June of 2017, as first outlined earlier this year. With the newest version of the Surface Pro, Microsoft made an equivalent to the iMac G4 by combining two important elements. The Microsoft Surface Pro (2017) is both enjoyable to use in a unique way, and it’s reliable. The unique/enjoyable factor comes from the keyboard attachment – the one that doesn’t come standard with the Surface itself.

iPad Pro with iOS 11 isn’t enough to compete with the Surface Pro

iPad Pro with iOS 11 isn’t enough to compete with the Surface Pro

As someone who has uncharacteristically fallen in love with his 9.7-inch iPad Pro, the revelation of iOS 11’s features was like an answer to long-held wishes. An expanded dock, a file manager, drag and drop. These do make the iPad Pro an even more convincing PC, or at least laptop, replacement. But as someone who also owns a well-aged Surface Pro 3, the iPad Pro is still a few leagues away from toppling the Surface Pro and its kin. Because unless Apple makes very drastic changes, the iPad, even with iOS 11, is still pretty much a gigantic iPhone.
