Android Auto hands-on: Promising but patchy flexibility

Android Auto hands-on: Promising but patchy flexibility

We've heard plenty about Apple's CarPlay, but what about Android Auto? Finally getting its moment in the spotlight now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is arriving, the dashboard-takeover isn't actually available on any production car quite yet, but I was able to take an early look at the LA Auto Show inside a new 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The premise is simple: plug in your Android phone - in this particular case, a Nexus 5 - via USB cable and the car's central infotainment touchscreen gets an Android Auto revamp, with specially-designed graphics for use while driving, voice control rather than stabbing at a keyboard, and smart integration with your use of Google services elsewhere. Interesting, but it's not entirely road-worthy just yet.

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV eyes-on

With the Mitsubishi Motors Concept XR-PHEV, the LA Auto Show 2014 sees a slick plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle drivetrain paired with high-end, bold styling - in bright red, of course. Mitsubishi brought this vehicle to LA not only reaffirm their commitment to the US market, but to show how future vehicles will look and run. As this vehicle is a concept, Mitsubishi says it'll never reach the road in its current form. On the other hand, the Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV does play host to not only futuristic aesthetics for next-gen cars, but futuristic technologies as well.

2015 Nissan Murano eyes-on

This year at the 2014 LA Auto Show we've been given a good look at the 2015 Nossan Murano. This is a vehicle that was originally showed off (in its earlier form) as the Nissan Resonance Concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto show. Back then we crossed our fingers that this vehicle would eventually see the real showroom floor as a next-generation crossover. This week we've seen what the 2015 Nissan Murano has become. With its V-Motion grille, signature headlines and a collection of futuristic technological advances, this vehicle is set to hit the road.

Here’s what $400,000 of Bentley gets you

Here’s what $400,000 of Bentley gets you

Nobody quite does luxury and performance like Bentley. The company's legacy of Bentley Boys, flogging their supercharged cars from road race to road race in the 1920s, has been given the knowing nod by special-edition cars from the marque for decades now, but never quite so comprehensively as the 2015 Mulsanne Speed. Taking the flagship spot at the top of Bentley's range, and doing so with no shortage of style, performance, and better-then-first-class accommodation, it's not only powerful but packs a serious degree of tech behind the several hides-worth of leather. I hid my press badge and pretended there was more than just dust in my wallet to find out more at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

Fiat’s 500X is a snappy little crossover coming for the 2016 model year

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Fiat is introducing a new crossover that keeps their small form-factor at heart. The 2016 Fiat 500X also side-hugs Fiat’s design cues, and sits at the top-end of their 500 lineup. Though small, the Fiat 500X packs a big punch, and works in several features that you might expect from a larger car. Squaring up to the Nissan Juke, Kia Soul, and Mini Countryman, Fiat’s sassy little crossover may be a sleeper hit.

Mazda’s 2016 MX-5 is cute, tiny & will sell like hotcakes

Mazda’s 2016 MX-5 is cute, tiny & will sell like hotcakes

We already knew Mazda's 2016 MX-5 Miata was going to be a potent little titch of a car, but it's only when you get up close to the new droptop that you realize just how well Mazda has nailed the aesthetic. Distilling the compact proportions of the original Miata with a dose of slinky, snake-eyed modern style, the new car looks like it's shaping up to be a tiny Jaguar or Alfa-Romeo at a fraction of the price.

We need to talk about the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE

We need to talk about the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE

Some cars at the LA Auto Show 2014 are all-new and clearly changed in their entirety; others, like the Jaguar F-TYPE R AWD look at first glance to have merely received a polish, and yet the differences are actually huge. For 2016, Jaguar has thrown all-wheel drive at its stunning coupe and convertible, but it's the new manual transmission option that will likely have enthusiasts really gleeful. Exactly how those new treats have been portioned out is likely to cause a few arguments, however.

That engine is slated to arrive in the auto maker's Colorado models in 2015. The concept brings with it elements designed specifically for going off the road, including a higher ground clearance and skid plates.
