iOS 11 Cydia jailbreak still ongoing despite drama

iOS 11 Cydia jailbreak still ongoing despite drama

Jailbreaking on iOS and rooting on Android aren’t as big as they were years ago but communities around them still do exist. Fortunately or unfortunately, those communities are also some of the most passionate and most vocal around. So when the last remaining jailbreak for iOS goes silent, there’s unsurprisingly no small amount of frustration among some in that circle. Cydia’s owner and lone developer Saurik has just basically confirmed that he is still working on a jailbreak for iOS 11. But given the hurt feelings and strong words being tossed around, there’s also a real possibility it might not arrive soon.

Beyond iPhone X: 3 potential uses for Apple’s TrueDepth

Beyond iPhone X: 3 potential uses for Apple’s TrueDepth

Apple is investing almost $400m into the one of the companies responsible for its TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone X, and it's likely just the first step in rolling the technology out further in its range. The decision to grant millions from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund to Finisar, the US-based manufacturer of lasers used in TrueDepth, is being billed as a win for American industry; however, it'll also give Finisar the scope to make more advanced versions. As they get smaller, more capable, and more precise, that opens the door to putting the clever camera into new places.

iTunes music store isn’t closing soon (don’t believe the hype)

Apple music downloads through the company's iTunes Music Store are not publicly scheduled for termination. A couple of reports were published by a single source with anonymous insider tips and Apple has refuted both of them. I want to be clear here - I'm not suggesting that sources that wish to remain anonymous are not to be used by news publications, only that in this case, the sources could just as easily have been from the publication itself.

This iPhone X clone has some odd origins

This iPhone X clone has some odd origins

The company is called Leagoo, and their business is copying the look and feel of popular smartphones. Leagoo took the opportunity this month to create a copy of the iPhone X, taking into consideration the notch at the top of the front display. The price of this device is almost certainly comparable to the rest of the phones the company has in stock: just over a couple hundred dollars (converted to USD.)

2018’s new iPhone X battery may finally fix complaints

2018's iPhone line-up will squeeze more battery into the same form-factor, it's reported, leading to longer-lasting phones. The improvements will be based on a combination of broader adoption of Apple's newest battery structure layout as seen in the iPhone X, and on new battery technology that will pack more mAh into each pack.

iPhone X vs Honor V10: Graphic Copycat Syndrome in 6 parts

iPhone X vs Honor V10: Graphic Copycat Syndrome in 6 parts

Today we're having a brief look at a series of images which capture the essence of the iPhone X and the Honor V10. More specifically, these images show the extreme similarities between the public presentations of both devices. The iPhone X was revealed by Apple back in September of 2017, and the Honor V10 was revealed by Huawei at the tail end of November 2019 for China, then again at a separate event in London on December 5th. NOTE: This is not a comparison of specs or performance. This is a comparison of how Apple and Huawei have chosen to represent their phones.

iPhone 11 release tipped in 3 models (Take a peek!)

Chances are the next iPhone for 2018 will throw users for another loop, not unlike what the iPhone X did to Apple fans in 2017. Instead of two standard models and one higher-end model, a set of tips this week suggest that the "third" model will play at the other end of the price spectrum. The new devices might well play like the Bugs Bunny version of the Three Bears, where the "just right" baby bear is actually the biggest!

Amazon Prime Video arrives on Apple TV at long last

After hearing promises of an Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV at WWDC 2017, the day has finally come. Amazon Prime Video has gone live for Apple TV, with just a few weeks to spare in Apple's promise that it would be here before the end of 2017. Just as well, it appears that the iOS Prime Video App has been updated to play nice with the iPhone X.

iPhone X isn’t Consumer Reports’ top pick

iPhone X isn’t Consumer Reports’ top pick

Non-profit organization Consumer Reports prides itself on offering “unbiased product ratings and reviews” and it isn’t averse to ruffling a few feathers to do so. It has given unfavorable, sometimes even scathing reviews on products like the new MacBook Pro, the Microsoft Surface line, and even the Tesla Model S. Although less damning this time, the magazine isn’t awarding the iPhone X a glowing recommendation, especially over its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus siblings. That’s because it has found it too be a tad too fragile and short-lived for its $1,000 price tag.

Gmail gets iPhone X support and a big new feature

Google has finally pushed out a Gmail iOS update that adds support for the iPhone X's beautiful, slightly unusual display. The notch is no longer at odds with the app's interface, which now plays nicely with the "ears" on either side of it. This is the latest of multiple Google app updates that have pushed out iPhone X support, the most recent one before this being Google Maps. iPhone X support isn't the only thing found in this Gmail update, though.

Consumers coveting the iPhone X can now buy an unlocked SIM-free version of the handset directly from Apple, giving them the freedom to use it on whatever carrier they want whenever they want. Apple might be sharing Face ID data with apps too freely

Apple might be sharing Face ID data with apps too freely

Most security researchers are stumbling to find a way to definitively prove, or disprove, the security and reliability of the iPhone X’s Face ID feature. Almost all of those, however, require a second face to bypass your legit one. It turns out that users might have something to fear even without a doppelganger. It is no secret that Apple allows third-party apps to access some Face ID data, but how much and how easy they’re getting that data could quickly become a privacy nightmare.
