The iPhone price gamble is looking more and more prescient

Apple's grand strategy to coast through the smartphone slowdown by selling more expensive phones has paid off, with Q3 2018 proving there's more to the bottom line than raw device numbers. The Cupertino company prompted consternation in the run-up to the iPhone X launch, amid rumors - which turned out to be true - that its most expensive model would start at $1,000.

iPhone and iPad unit sales plateau again in Apple Q3 2018

In Apple's Q3 2018 earnings report, the company revealed that unit sales of both the iPad and the iPhone were almost identical to last year at this time. Sequentially, iPhone sales revenue and unit sales took a real dip - which is pretty standard for this time of year. Let's compare this quarter's hardware sales data to last year's at this time and see what we make of it.

How did OnePlus just beat Apple and Samsung?

How did OnePlus just beat Apple and Samsung?

A perfect storm of sales and big-name new phone releases made OnePlus win the quarter for premium device sales in India in Q2 2018. Apple's iPhone 8 and iPhone X are not currently in vogue as we're a few months away from a new launch, and Galaxy Note 9 is coming at the start of August - so that leaves OnePlus 6 to clean up, really. OnePlus took advantage of the day with promotions that work particularly well in India, too: EMI and cashback offers.

Your new phone’s display was a waste of money

Your new phone’s display was a waste of money

Today I'm going to go over the reasons why the money spent on newly enlarged or otherwise differently-shaped displays is wasted. From the time the new display was made to the point at which it became a standard, in that timeframe. In that span of time, that extra bit of display that wasn't in the mix before - that's useless. It's akin to the black bars you see above and below your movie when you play it in "widescreen" format on your home TV.

Apple iPhone repair videos leaked, specialized tools revealed

Apple iPhone repair videos leaked, specialized tools revealed

It’s really no secret by now that Apple has some of the most restrictive repair policies in the consumer electronics market. It even sometimes runs afoul of government regulations regarding warranties and third-party repairs. It has some pretty secretive procedures and proprietary tools for the job, which has left many in the third-party repair service industry coming up with their own solutions. That might have just become easier now that someone has leaked Apple’s internal videos showing its own official procedures for opening up iPhones and even MacBooks.

Move over iPhone, this phone has a display hole

Move over iPhone, this phone has a display hole

The first of the post-notch smartphone concepts has arrived, straight from China, where all awesome gadgets come first. When it came time to utilize the space normally apparently wasted by the home screen's status bar, Apple decided to move its display up and its sensors down, creating a display notch for iPhone X. When Essential wanted the same thing - before Apple, mind you - they just knocked out a piece of the display too, only this time just for the camera.

Samsung ad openly mocks iPhone X download speed

Samsung ad openly mocks iPhone X download speed

Ads that try to poke fun or even diss competitors often fall under one of two types: tastefully funny or outright mockery. Samsung’s anti-iPhone ads have fluctuated between those two, sometimes even falling somewhere in between. This newest video clip is somewhat of the latter, explicitly calling out the iPhone X and its “not as fast as the Galaxy S9” download speed. Whether the ad is actually entertaining or not, you decide.

Naming the new iPhone, X, and Plus

Naming the new iPhone, X, and Plus

Today a series of leaks tipped off possible new naming conventions for the iPhone and iPhone X from Apple. In the past it seemed like Apple wouldn't be able to break away from the numbering construct they'd made for the iPhone. Each new iPhone had a higher number behind it, and everyone understood the line in which they were released. Now with the advent of the new form for the iPhone in the iPhone X, there's an opportunity for Apple to change.

Three new iPhones appear to be on the way as a set of frontside glass panels appeared in leaks this morning. Two separate sources had their hands on the goods, both sources with fairly incredible track records when it comes to this sort of thing. If what they presented is real, Apple will come to market later this year with three devices: iPhone, iPhone X, and iPhone X Plus.
