iPhone 8 battery swelling reports have caught Apple’s attention

iPhone 8 battery swelling reports have caught Apple’s attention

Earlier this week, we covered some rather alarming iPhone 8 reports. A small number of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus users have experienced battery swelling, some to the point where it causes the display to lift out of its housing. These reports have caught Apple's attention too, as the manufacturer now says that it's looking into the matter.

iPhone X ‘True Super Cycle’ tipped for 2018

iPhone X ‘True Super Cycle’ tipped for 2018

The iPhone X is part of Apple's next Super Cycle - and that's neither a new feature for the iPhone nor a new way to wash it. The Super Cycle referred to in a report from KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo today (in a new investor note) is a long period of financial growth for a company - due in this case to the release of a brand new iPhone X, a device which looks and acts significantly different from its predecessors. The call for a super cycle to begin in 2018 goes against two opposing analyst trends, one that says this cycle will begin in 2017, the other that there won't be a super cycle at all.

Google made a huge mistake with Pixel 2

Google made a huge mistake with Pixel 2

When the Pixel 2 was announced, I did not expect that Google would bring back wireless charging - and they didn't. Much to the surprise of the industry at large, Apple added wireless charging with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X this year. But Google didn't come back with wireless charging - not now, and not since the Nexus 4. Though their reasoning holds some water, it most certainly does not hold nearly enough.

Dear smartphones: Why use any cord at all?

Dear smartphones: Why use any cord at all?

In the future, cords will only be used to run power across long distances and to facilitate the transfer of data only when the fastest transfer will do. Aside from those two items, everything else will be done without the ubiquitous USB, or Lightning plug, or headphone jack. No company can stop this from happening, and only the most extremely rare company will stick around to create retro hardware.

Two more iPhones split at the seams [UPDATE: now 3]

Two more iPhones split at the seams [UPDATE: now 3]

It would appear that a couple more iPhone 8 Plus phones have opened themselves up for want of a bigger space for a battery. These two units add on to the two we reported last week, both of which within the the first week. In our first report we found one Japan, another in Taiwan. The two newest reports come from Greece and Canada.

iPhone 8 Plus battery expansion: Apple investigating details

iPhone 8 Plus battery expansion: Apple investigating details

It would appear that the iPhone 8 Plus may have a manufacturing problem on its hands - maybe, possibly. Two and possibly three separate events seem to have appeared in which the iPhone 8 Plus's display has popped up from its sides. Sort of like a warped piece of wood popping up from a outdoor deck, or a plastic tupperware container filled with to the brim with corn kernels and placed in a microwave. Something's got to give.

iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 face off in a blender

iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 face off in a blender

Most, but definitely not all, of the smartphone torture durability tests you see on YouTube are meant to mentally prepare users for the fate that awaits them should they accidentally drop, or scratch, or burn, their precious device. But how often do you accidentally drop your phone inside the swirling metal mass of death known as a blander? Probably never, hopefully. But in case you do, by happenstance, misplace an iPhone 8 or a Galaxy S8 inside one, now you will know which one will last just a few spins longer.

iPhone 8 Review

iPhone 8 Review

"Familiarity breeds contempt," or so the old proverb goes, and never has that been more topical than for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. In any other year from the past decade, Apple's new smartphones would be the topic of endless fascination and discussion. In 2017, though, they're almost forgotten in the shadow of the iPhone X. While "X" may mark the spot where Apple's future lies, however, the realities of price, availability, and carrier upgrades means many more people will switch to an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus this time around. So, are they being short-changed?

iPhone 8 crackling earpiece fix coming, iOS 11.0.1 rolling out

iPhone 8 crackling earpiece fix coming, iOS 11.0.1 rolling out

To some, Apple might be losing its touch. In the past, each release and each new device underwent stringent tests to ensure that the user’s first experience would be as flawless and as pleasurable as possible. Now it seems that, just like any other company, new Apple products are exhibiting growing pains. This includes issues like crackling audio from the earpiece of the iPhone 8 as well as several major bugs on iOS 11. Fortunately, fixes are on the way or are already here.

This iOS 11 setting isn’t new, but it is essential

This iOS 11 setting isn’t new, but it is essential

It's not strictly new, but this iOS setting just changed the way I use apps, download apps, and keep apps to use in the future. This isn't the way I used to do things - I'd usually test and app until a "would you PLZ rate our app, THX" popup occurred, then I'd delete the app immediately. But that's no longer the deal, per Apple's new rules and this one setting. What we'll find out now is if this setting and these rules have the gas to change the way apps get rated by everyday average users.

iPhone 8 drop tests don’t inspire much confidence

iPhone 8 drop tests don’t inspire much confidence

The switch to glass backs on smartphones have users doubly worried about the survivability of their precious companions. It's bad enough that you don't have much of a choice for your screen other than breakable glass or scratchable plastic, now they also have to pay greater care to the backs as well. Unsurprisingly, this has become a core concern for owners and would-be owners of the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, prompting not a few drop tests to see how they might fare in theoretical situations. The results probably won't surprise you.

Force rebooting an iPhone 8 is like a Konami code

Force rebooting an iPhone 8 is like a Konami code

It may sound prehistoric, but there will always be times when you need to forcibly turn off your smartphone. That may be because it froze or, in the case of Apple devices, you see the dreaded "Connect to iTunes" screen. Since Apple blazed the trail for non-removable batteries, it had to resort to a specific series of button presses to reboot an iPhone, iPod, or iPad. That pattern of presses changed last year with the iPhone 7 and is changing again with the iPhone 8, this time requiring a bit more timing than usual.
