Elon Musk’s Hyperloop plans are an unsurprising surprise

Elon Musk may not have set out to build a Hyperloop, but it looks like the allure of putting those Boring Company digging machines to work is too much for the ambitious billionaire. Having watched - interested, but maintaining that he was too busy with SpaceX and Tesla to get involved himself - from the sidelines as startups like Hyperloop One tackled with the technical and regulatory issues around putting humans in bullet-like pods and blasting them at high speed through underground tunnels, it now seems he can't resist giving it a go himself.

Hyperloop puts the pod in the tube, and you have to watch what happened

A year ago, Hyperloop One successfully completed its first phase of testing. Now, 15 months later, the company has announced the completion of Phase 2, with plenty of new Hyperloop records being set in this second round of testing. In fact, the results from Phase 2 vastly exceed the results from Phase 1 in many cases.

Elon Musk Hyperloop for 29 min NY-DC ride given go-ahead [Updated]

Elon Musk's ambitious Hyperloop tunnel digging plan has been given the green light to go digging on the East Coast, potentially cutting the trip from New York to Washington D.C. to under half an hour. The news, described by Musk this morning as "verbal government approval" on Twitter, is yet to be confirmed by transport regulators. However, it's a considerable step forward in what initially seemed like a joke by the eccentric billionaire.

SpaceX Hyperloop pod competition delayed until 2017

As testing on Hyperloop, SpaceX's high-tech, high-speed transportation system of the future, progresses, the Elon Musk-founded company has announced a delay in the ongoing competition for the design of the pod vehicles. The contest was originally scheduled to be held later this summer, but will now take place in January 2017, giving the participated teams more time to work on their designs.

This is what a passenger Hyperloop’s interior may look like

The passenger version of the Hyperloop, the hopeful transportation tube of the future, could get travelers from one coast to another at breakneck speeds. This means days' worth of travel will be accomplished in hours, and those hours will be spent in a windowless tube where a certain level of comfort will be needed to keep everyone calm and patient. Newly released renders of what the interior may look like, though, are already inspiring anxiety.

Hyperloop One’s first big propulsion test was a success

The future of transportation is, according to Hyperloop One, firing you body at high speed through a pipe, and it just ran the first trial on the way there. The company - formerly known as Hyperloop Technologies - has successfully demonstrated an open-air test in North Las Vegas, Nevada, that although short is nonetheless impressive.

Browser game tests you to survive Elon Musk’s Hyperloop

Excited by the prospect of high-speed travel by riding in a pod through airless tubes in Elon Musk's concept of the Hyperloop? Want to give it a try now? Well, there's a 8-bit styled web browser game that has you navigating a pod with the hope of keeping it one piece. Called Break-a-Pod, it's ridiculously hard in a similar way as Flappy Bird was, but it was actually created by a team that's building a pod prototype with the hope of bringing it to SpaceX, the company behind Hyperloop.

SpaceX building a Hyperloop test track for pod contest

SpaceX building a Hyperloop test track for pod contest

SpaceX is kicking off a competition for Hyperloop pods, challenging teams to come up with designs for the innovative transportation system. The high speed train-in-a-tube concept was first detailed by SpaceX founder Elon Musk back in 2013, though the serial entrepreneur has said he has enough on his plate with sending up reusable rockets and developing electric cars at Tesla to actually build the Hyperloop himself. Instead, he's building a test track for pod creators to test their ideas.

Full-scale Hyperloop track planned for California launch in 2016

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop concept is exciting for California, and possibly the country. Via a network of tubes, we’ll potentially fly around the country feet off the ground, rifling past farmland at breakneck speeds. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, a startup that wants to bring Musk’s vision to reality, has secured land for a Hyperloop test track. In the town of Quay Valley in California, the team want to build a five-mile long track to test Hyperloop vehicle concepts in real-time.
