This week the folks behind Hulu’s mobile apps have announced ad-supported full TV episodes. This means that while you’ll still have to pay for full Hulu Plus action, the app won’t be completely useless if you’re not all about pushing the full Hulu Plus experience. This release will be coming to both iPhone and Android first.
It’s a battle between Netflix and Hulu for original content and exclusive content, make no mistake about it. This week there’s been another push by Hulu to make the public aware of their original content - called "Hulu Original", of course - with assurances that several titles will be coming to the service provider anew while several titles will be sticking around for future seasons.
If you’re using Hulu Plus on your PlayStation 3, Playstation 4, or Xbox One, the team responsible for helping you control this situation are bringing some heat. There’s now a Remote Control app for Hulu Plus, allowing you to control what you see on your TV from your smartphone or tablet. It’s all very retro, when you think about it.
Amazon has announced an update for Fire TV, with voice search support incoming for Hulu Plus, Crackle, and Showtime Anytime, as well as a fresh batch of games, Amazon MP3 support, and more. The update to the set-top box is due over the summer, Amazon says, though voice searching for Netflix is still conspicuous by its absence.
Word about an Amazon set top box has abounded for many months, with word surfacing in April of last year that a STB was in the works, followed by a more recent tip that the device will launch this month, a change from the previously anticipated holiday season arrival. Now sources have surfaced saying the box will include apps for competitors' offerings, including Netflix.
Hulu has announced its Originals lineup for this year at CES, detailing both the upcoming premieres that will be making their debut in coming weeks and returning original series that have been on the holiday season hiatus. Among the offerings detailed is the pending premier of "Deadbeat", a supernatural comedy directed by Arrested Development's Troy Miller that will be launching on April 9.
While it'd be easier to think that the world was moving towards an all-mobile environment for consuming media, Hulu suggests today that it's slightly more complicated than that. Statistics shown by the media deliverer today show how it's essentially a 50/50 split between those who use their service on a computer (desktop or notebook) and those who use everything else. At this time, that means that half of Hulu's viewers use a smartphone, tablet, or TV box to experience the entertainment.
Hulu has announced Hulu Plus support for the PlayStation 4, with the new streaming video app expected to be available alongside Sony's console on Friday, November 13th. The company already has a PS3 app, but the PS4 version will boost artwork size and improve navigation, Hulu says, along with introducing dedicated pages for specific types of content like Hulu Kids, Originals, and more.
Hulu has added Hulu Plus Chromecast support to its iPhone app, allowing users of Apple's smartphone to control playback of the on-demand video service through the compact media adapter. Hulu Plus first made an appearance on Google's streaming dongle at the start of the month, but was only available on the iPad version of the app.
It has been a long time coming but Nintendo has finally announced this week that the 3DS portable game console has access to streaming service Hulu Plus. I say Hulu Plus finally comes to the Nintendo 3DS because way back in October of 2011 was the first time we heard Hulu Plus was coming to Nintendo's portable 3-D game system.
Netflix and YouTube might be the only third-party services compatible with the Chromecast right now, but HBO and Hulu are the first companies since the device's release to reveal that they're working on their own Chromecast apps. Users can stream HBO Go and Hulu content from their Chrome browser to the Chromecast, but official support should make the experience a lot better.
