HTC might be using Nokia’s playbook

HTC might be using Nokia’s playbook

According to a tip this afternoon, Nokia is about to go - or has already gone - the way of Nokia in the smartphone business. The tip suggests that HTC might begin using ODM for smartphone manufacturing. That'd mean that HTC would continue to be the brand, and HTC would continue to design phones, but HTC wouldn't be manufacturing the phones themselves.

This HTC U12+ could be a masterpiece

A set of images depicting the future HTC U12+ can be seen today, each of them showing a device that might well turn the company's ill fortunes around. These images are concept renderings based on information shared off-the-books well before device release. The real deal might look a bit different - but if it's anything like this, HTC might well have a winner on their hands.

The next HTC phone may look and feel unique

Believe it or not, HTC fans, the company's next smartphone might actually have features that really, truly set it aside from the rest of the pack. Not that HTC hasn't done this in the past, but given the current state of the industry, it's a really, really good sign that HTC is keeping its eye on the prize. Today's rumors about the HTC U12 include word of some rather interesting pieces of hardware finish.

HTC U12 design tipped to have a subtle change

HTC U12 design tipped to have a subtle change

With Samsung’s time on stage now over, we will soon be hearing more about those who didn’t brave the MWC 2018 storm. Huawei is next up with its notched P20 and LG might be following next month, though details of its next flagship is still mostly a mystery at this point. That pretty much leaves HTC as the one other major OEM expected to make a grand entrance this first half of the year. And when the HTC U12 does make that entrance, it will come not just with two cameras on its back but with a slight change in that back’s design as well.

HTC U11 EYEs has two eyes in front for you

HTC U11 EYEs has two eyes in front for you

HTC doesn't seem to be done trying to milk all that it can from the U11 brand, even in 2018. It also doesn't seem to be done mixing up specs and features to try and sell its growing number of almost indistinguishable models. This time though, it is adding at least one new feature to make it worthy of its moniker. There's a reason for the "s" in thr HTC U11 EYEs' name, and that's for the pair of eyes it has on its face.

Unlocked HTC U11 life gets Android Oreo today

Unlocked HTC U11 life gets Android Oreo today

The HTC U11 life is a pretty young phone, enjoying its worldwide launch only a month ago. Its launch in the US looked a fair bit different than its launch in other regions: while the HTC U11 life was launched as part of the Android One program in many areas around the world, here in the US, we only received the unlocked version. One of the biggest differences between the two versions is that the U11 life didn't launch running Android Oreo out of the box in the States.

7 best premium smartphones of 2017

With the year almost over and all of 2017 premium racehorses in position, it’s time to take stock of what’s available to us so far. Just in time, too, since the holiday, and therefore shopping, season is upon us. Not everyone can be winners, and, let’s face it, we probably don’t want them to be. Sooner or later, choices have to be made. Picking out a new smartphone, especially when you’re playing for both teams, can be a pretty daunting quest. Since no one size fits all, and no smartphone can be perfect for everything and everyone, we’ve tried to present this year’s top models along different use cases and needs.

Android Oreo galore: Nokia 8, Xperia XZs, unlocked HTC U11, betas

Android Oreo has been out for months now but, naturally, most OEMs haven’t been quick to jump into it. But they do say “better late than never” and, to be fair, it isn’t exactly that late yet anyway. As if scheduled to coincide with Thanksgiving, some manufacturers have gotten the ball rolling on Android 8.0 Oreo (sadly not 8.1) for some models. Some have even started the beta test for other devices, or at least promised them to come really soon.

HTC U11+ Edge Launcher and more unofficially available for U11

HTC U11+ Edge Launcher and more unofficially available for U11

HTC has just announced two U11 variants, including a larger U11+. Unfortunately, that one isn’t coming to the US, because HTC thinks it would be a bad business move for the market. Fortunately, there isn’t much that difference between the two, like the larger screen, the semi-translucent back cover, and Android 8.0 Oreo and a new radial menu launcher. But before you think that it is unfortunate that the last part isn’t available on the slightly older U11 yet, fortunately for you, you’re wrong and can now install that new launcher on your U11. Unofficially of course and at your own risk.

Google Pixel 2 XXL Muskie is HTC’s Schrodinger’s Cat

A third Google Pixel smartphone for 2017 was just revealed - and it's not the machine we expected. Instead of remaining hidden behind the scenes in a forever-unmade form, HTC seems to have taken the Xperia Play route. Where the Sony Xperia Play was originally meant to be a Nexus smartphone, so too was the latest in a pair of HTC-made smartphones, the other of which was revealed in reviews today. At the same time, a great many of the truths we're meant to cling to today depend greatly on our own point of view.
