iOS 11.2.5 release adds HomePod support and Siri News

iOS 11.2.5 has been released, and while Apple's latest update may have HomePod support as its headline features, there'll be iPhone functionality that appeals even if the smart speaker doesn't. The new version of the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and iPod touch software brings with it support for setting up the HomePod, should you be among those picking up the streaming speaker when it arrives in stores in early February.

Eight months after it was announced, Apple's HomePod is finally making it to Apple Store shelves. The Siri smart speaker promises voice-controlled access to your streaming music along with the ability to answer questions and control your smart home. However, there are some things to bear in mind before you flex your credit card.

Apple HomePod release date revealed at long last

Apple HomePod release date revealed at long last

After being spotted at the FCC last week, we thought that Apple might be close to launching its HomePod smart speaker. As it turns out, those suspicions were right, with Apple finally announcing a release date today. Originally scheduled to launch before the end of 2017, Apple delayed the HomePod at the last minute, pushing it back into 2018 and missing the ever-so-crucial holiday shopping season.

Apple HomePod can recognize multiple voices, mute Siri

Apple HomePod can recognize multiple voices, mute Siri

Siri may have been the one that truly kicked of the smart assistant trend, but it has fallen by the wayside in terms of capabilities and especially devices. Like smart speakers, for example. That will soon be changing as we draw even closer to the long overdue launch of Apple’s HomePod speakers. Which means the trickle of leaks is, slowly but very surely, growing into a gushing stream. The latest to come out is some functionality that other leaders in the smart assistant only recently got hold of as well: the ability to recognize more than just one voice.

Apple HomePod gets FCC approval, expected to launch soon

Apple HomePod gets FCC approval, expected to launch soon

For those waiting to get their hands on Apple's upcoming HomePod, the wait appears to soon be over. The Siri-powered smart speaker was delayed from its original release last fall to sometime in "early 2018," but the device was recently granted approval by the FCC for sale in the US. There's still no solid launch date, however, but the approval means the HomePod could soon be challenging the Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers for users' living rooms.

iOS 11.2.5 beta lets Siri play podcasts when you ask for news

iOS 11.2.5 beta lets Siri play podcasts when you ask for news

One of the very first use cases, and probably the first practical use case, of voice-activated virtual personal assistants was speaking the news out loud. Perfect for times when you couldn’t even spare a glance at your phone’s screen but still want to keep updated with current events. But while almost all AI assistants are capable of that, Siri is getting one new ability in the latest iOS beta: the ability to stream news podcasts instead of just blurting out headlines and summaries.

Apple’s HomePod delay is the right decision

Apple’s HomePod delay is the right decision

Apple may be missing the holiday shopping season by delaying its HomePod until 2018, but that decision could pay dividends if it makes Siri a better assistant. The smart speaker was due to launch in the US, UK, and Australia in December 2017, having been announced back in June alongside the iMac Pro at WWDC. Today, it conceded it will "need a little more time" before HomePod is ready for public consumption.

Apple HomePod delayed

Apple HomePod delayed

Apple has delayed its HomePod smart speaker, pushing the launch of the Siri-powered Amazon Echo rival back into 2018. HomePod was revealed back in June 2017, a streaming speaker that physically embodied Siri, and which promised both smart home control and better music playback than other such products on the market.

New Apple HomePod could add iPhone X’s Face ID

New Apple HomePod could add iPhone X’s Face ID

Apple's HomePod smart speaker isn't even on Apple Store shelves yet, but whispers about the next-generation model are already getting us intrigued. The Siri-powered speaker was unveiled earlier this year, as Apple's alternative to Amazon's Echo and Google's Home. However, while this first-generation HomePod focuses predominantly on music, its successor could use the same technology that powers Face ID on the iPhone X to be far more useful.

Apple iPhone 8 event: the announcement schedule (or what we expect)

The Apple Event on October 12th will include the products shown in this article in the order they appear - or so we expect. Due to the inordinate amount of leaks surrounding Apple's upcoming products, not least of all the next-gen iPhone 8 (or whatever it'll be called), the following predictions can be made. I'm also ordering the product announcements below according to patterns Apple's exhibited with past releases at major events over the past decade.

5 iPhone 8 bombshells leaked in the past 2 days

Over the past couple of days the next iPhone's features have been tossed about like a spilled pack of cards, in spectacular fashion. It's not as if the iPhone 8 hasn't been leaked before - it's just that it hasn't been leaked by Apple itself. Lots of what you're about to see came from firmware code released by Apple for the HomePod - and what's included inside was rather telling.

More iPhone 8 HomePod hints: tap to wake, split status, no Touch ID

Since Apple was “kind enough” to itself provide a treasure trove of clues regarding the upcoming iPhones, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has lost no time in digging those hints out and dusting them off for public enjoyment. And while they say nothing about the actual design of the iPhone 8 itself aside from one art asset, they do help give users some idea of the features they can expect from the upcoming 10th anniversary edition.
