HBO Now has a paltry 800,000 subscribers

HBO has revealed the number of subscribers on its video streaming service HBO Now, saying it has 800,000 paying users. The number was disclosed by HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler during a conference call today, a time during which he also stated that the company sees “an enormous amount of potential ahead.” He also stated the $14.99/month subscription fee will remain the established rate, at least for now, though it is possible it could change in the future.

In what shouldn't really come as a surprise, HBO's hit drama Game of Thrones has been recognized as the most pirated TV show of 2015, beating out hits like The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory. This marks the fourth year in a row that the show has been recognized for the feat by TorrentFreak, not to mention setting new worldwide piracy records earlier this year. According to TorrentFreak's data, Game of Thrones' season 5 finale was torrented roughly 14.4 million times.

Sesame Street gets “exclusive” with HBO

Sesame Street is about to break standards for television shows that've been on for 45 seasons. Not that a lot of shows have been on for that long, of course. But here the Sesame Street show is prepared not to go off and fade away, but to grow. Signing a deal with HBO, Sesame Workshop has promised five seasons to HBO with "almost twice as much new content as previous seasons." This content will be "exclusive" to HBO for nine months after each episode is aired, after which PBS will be allowed to show reruns for free.

Good news today for Google Chromecast owners that have been craving their favorite HBO shows: the HBO Now service has added support for streaming to the TV dongle. The new feature comes via app updates for both iOS and Android versions of HBO Now, which are already available on their respective app marketplaces. HBO Now was first launched on iOS devices including the iPhone and iPad earlier this year, and quickly gained popularity, followed by its arrival on Android only a few weeks ago.

Game of Thrones stands chief among all shows, at least when you look at how many people are pirating it. That piracy was aided by early leaks of season 5 episodes, and all in all HBO is scrambling to squeeze some pocket change from those Internet rebels. As such, it isn’t surprising HBO has decided to launch the digital downloads for season 5 before it releases the Blu-ray and DVD versions (though the network probably won’t cry if you pre-order them anyway). Downloads start next month.
