What can Google Lens do? 10 things, for now

As of today, Google Lens can identify, translate, or otherwise work with Text, Barcodes, Landmarks, Books, and Media. It can also identify popular dog breeds and cat breeds - so you can finally figure out what your mutt is. Or if you have an especially strange-looking dog, you can find out what your dog MIGHT be. Today we're going to run down the latest list of things Google Lens can do.

Google Lens updated: Where’s the app for Android?

Google Lens is a magical piece of camera-based feature for Android devices, and it'll be out for iOS soon. But where is it? Google's implementation of Google Lens isn't the most obvious sort of feature - especially not in a world that expects separate apps for every different neat phone function. Google Lens was updated this week, and it's able to do a few new things - but... where is it?

Google AIY Vision Kit brings computer vision in a cardboard box

Google AIY Vision Kit brings computer vision in a cardboard box

Google Cardboard, the previous VR platform, might be dead, but Google is finding other ways to put cardboard in people’s hands. Last May, it introduced its AIY DIY AI Voice kit that leveraged the power of the Raspberry Pi to help you make your own Google Assistant in a cardboard box. Now it is making another RPi-based DIY kit, this time focusing on computer vision and on-device machine learning instead. Introducing the AIY Vision Kit, your Google Lens in a box.

Google Lens rolls out to Assistant on Pixel and Pixel 2

Google Lens rolls out to Assistant on Pixel and Pixel 2

A useful new tool is rolling out to both the original Pixel and newer Pixel 2 smartphones: users have found that Google Lens, the visual search feature that relies on the device's camera, has started arriving in Google Assistant. It's a gradual rollout, unfortunately, so not every Pixel owner has it just yet, but it a good step towards making Lens more accessible and easier to summon.

Google Lens app download out for Pixel and rooted Android

Google Lens app download out for Pixel and rooted Android

Google Lens was made available to Android devices this week through Google Photos. This app within an app, as it might appear, isn't available to just anyone - only those savvy enough to root their device and install the files through the back door. As always with this sort of thing, I must warn the average user that this process can result in the bricking of one's phone - in other words, if one does not know what this process is all about in the first place, one should be exceedingly cautious.

Google Lens pretty much confirmed for Pixel release

Google Lens pretty much confirmed for Pixel release

Google Pixel 2's main super secret feature seems to have spilled here days before the device is revealed with Google Lens. The feature's been in Android before for more than a half-decade - in different forms, through different Google apps - but now's the time. In an APK teardown of the most recent version of the Google app, a Google Bar has been discovered with an in-OS editor and a new icon - ready to roll for the new version of Google Lens.

This is Pixel 2’s secret weapon VS iPhone 8 (quite likely)

This is Pixel 2’s secret weapon VS iPhone 8 (quite likely)

Google Pixel 2 (this year's Pixel) has a secret weapon it'll use to battle the iPhone 8 - more than likely. I can't be absolutely certain about this since Google itself hasn't made anything official, but the timing lines up pretty gosh-darned well. Just as Apple's next big thing is not an iPhone, Google's next big thing is not a Pixel - it's what's inside that counts.

Google Lens: Assistant and Photos get a super smart update

Google Lens: Assistant and Photos get a super smart update

This week Google revealed that they'll be making a new push for their "Google Lens" initiative (and eventual app integration). Much like what we've seen in the past with things like Google Goggles, Google Lens is about to make the things Android smartphones see - recognizable. As Google suggested today, Google Lens will be a "set of vision-based computing capabilities."
