Nexus 5X gets fingerprint swipe, Nexus 6P might follow

The Android platform is already notorious for its fragmentation and Google may have contributed to that even further. When it launched its own Google Pixel, it introduced some features that may never reach its other Nexus devices, even if the hardware were capable of supporting it. Google’s tune has changed a bit after much criticism, at least for one particular feature. Fingerprint swipe down, first seen on the Pixel, are coming and, at least according to some reports, has already landed on some Nexus 5X devices.

Fingerprint Gestures gives other devices a taste of Pixel

Fingerprint Gestures gives other devices a taste of Pixel

The Google Pixel is definitely no Nexus. One of the sure signs of that are the features that won’t be provided to other Android smartphones, even Nexus ones. Like the fingerprint gestures, which Google initially claimed was hardware dependent. After Google more or less admitted that it’s really only an issue of firmware, the door was opened for developers to try and bring that feature to other devices, Nexus or otherwise. And now there’s an app for that and one that’s actually available on Google Play Store.

How to get Google Pixel fingerprint swipe gestures on Nexus 6P

Fingerprint Cards has confirmed that the Nexus 6P and 5X have the same sensor as the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. As such, developers hypothesize that the same implementation of code could be possible. A similar set of firmware codes would need to appear on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL for this to happen. For this to happen, Google would need to dedicate time to making it happen.

Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact US models can become great again

Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact US models can become great again

Sony has finally made available its last 2016 flagship models in the US, the Xperia XZ and the smaller Xperia XZ Compact. Although the smartphone did fail to check a few boxes (1080p screen, 3 GB RAM), they’re biggest crime in the US are the missing fingerprint sensors. Not that the hardware is missing but they have been disabled, for reasons still unknown. The good news, it has just been confirmed that this is a purely software limitation that can actually be “fixed”. The bad news, it’s not going to be for the faint of heart.

Xiaomi Mi 5s hides Qualcomm ultrasonic fingerprint sensor inside

Chinese superstar Xiaomi has just released two new flagship smartphones and, while they might be too easy to pan as yet another familiar-looking pair, the Xiaomi Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus do have a few tricks up their sleeves, especially the smaller model. While in most cases an incremental step up from this year’s Mi 5 generation, the Mi 5s in particular has an interesting feature that is, strangely and sadly, gimped by implementation: an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Sony Xperia XZ, X Compact missing fingerprint scanners in US

Yet another fluke or a worrying trend? Just when you thought Sony is finally doing good by its stalwart Android fans, it pulls yet another one that makes you wonder just what the Japanese OEM is thinking. The Xperia XZ “true flagship” and the Xperia X Compact “mini flagship” are both headed to the US, but although much-awaited, they might not arrive complete. The particular models intended for the US market will apparently NOT feature a fingerprint scanner that has become a staple of any flagship smartphone.

Chromebooks might sport fingerprint scanners soon

Chromebooks
are experiencing a revival in market interest, in no small part thanks to Google’s promise to bring Android apps to the platform. Given that renewed uptake, it is probably high time that Chromebook makers update their wares to modern standards. Acer’s new Chromebook R 13, for example, is trying to take on the tablet and convertible laptop market. Based on some commits to Chromium, on which Chrome and Chrome OS are built upon, upcoming Chromebooks could also start supporting stronger security measures, including support for fingerprint scanners.

iPhone patent will collect thieves’ fingerprint, photo, data

“Apple Picking”, referring to the spate of iPhone thefts a few years back, might no longer be as common, but unauthorized physical access to smartphones and mobile devices is still pretty much a thing. Apple, how has been very aggressive with anti-theft measures, has apparently filed a patent that takes things a step further. Based on the patent, an iPhone, under a set of circumstances, could collect biometric information as well as photos of an alleged thief. Or basically anyone trying and failing to unlock the smartphone.

3D-printed fingerprints may help police access locked phones

Law enforcement isn't happy about the rise of biometric phone security -- that is, fingerprint sensors -- because it is incredibly hard to bypass. Though the 3D-printed fingerprints haven't yet been verified as functional, the issue has already raised a new round of criticism and privacy concerns.
