Vivo X20 Plus with in-display fingerprint sensor launch details

Vivo may not be one of the most well-known Chinese smartphone brands across the globe, but it is definitely one of the most adventurous. It was one of the first to make the world’s thinnest smartphone (back then only 0.7 cm thick) and was one of the first to jump on 6 GB of RAM and deca-core processors. And this week it will be making history again by becoming the first to use the in-display fingerprint sensor technology that should have been in the Galaxy S8 and iPhone X first.

Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

There were no sensational new smartphones announced at CES this year, but there is one that is at least promising to do that very soon. No, not the Galaxy S9 or any foldable phone. Chinese OEM Vivo, which some might be surprised to know is one of the world’s top 5 phone makers, is showing of what is still a prototype of a smartphone that is ready for mass production. But while the smartphone itself might be a bit nondescript at this point, it has one feature no other smartphone has yet: a fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen.

Android in 2018: Trends and predictions

Android in 2018: Trends and predictions

It's the start of the new year so, naturally, it's time to dust off those crystal balls and magic 8-balls. And while we're no Nostradamus, we can still do a bit of intelligent guessing on what will happen next based on what has come to pass. And if 2017 is any indication, it looks like we're going to be in for a rather fun and, at the same time, rough 2018 in Android land. Here are some of the new things that could come our way this year, in no particular order.

Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

Human Interface Device (HID) expert Synaptics might be grasping at straws to salvage what it can from its much-delayed in-display fingerprint sensor. It recently announced that the sensor, the Clear ID FS9500, has gone into mass production with one of the five Tier 1 smartphone makers in the world. Not leaving much time for a guessing game, Synaptics has finally revealed who that OEM is, and it is none other than Vivo who, just a few months ago, flaunted Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead.

Synaptics Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner to go on a “Tier 1” phone

Too late the hero perhaps? Synaptics has just proudly announced that its Clear ID FS9500, which is perhaps the world’s first commercial in-display fingerprint scanner, has already started production. More than a year too late for it to do any good for the likes of Samsung and Apple. Synaptics doesn’t seem to be worried, however, as that same announcement reveals that the mass production is for a “Tier 1 OEM”. So let the guessing game begin!

Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor location confirmed by Health app

Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor location confirmed by Health app

Samsung had a nearly perfect 2017 if not for one nitpick. It obstinately placed the rear fingerprint scanner in an inconvenient and odd location. Granted, that flaw wasn’t as bad as exploding phones, but it, unfortunately, marred the Galaxy S8’s and Galaxy Note 8’s image. Samsung has apparently learned its lesson and will be putting the sensor dead center. At least that seems to be the confirmation based on Samsung’s own Health app, which has been updated to show the new backside layout.

Galaxy S9 pre-release leaks: fixing these S8 mistakes

The Samsung Galaxy S9 was the subject of a number of tips today and over the past few days, largely with respect to device size. What we've gotten to know about this device is, first and foremost, it'll look different from its predecessor. According to feline-icon'ed South Korea-based tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S9's backside in particular "will change a lot."

Samsung patents pressure sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor

Samsung patents pressure sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor

Rumors of the in-display fingerprint scanner’s death may have been greatly exaggerated. Or, at the very least, greatly confused. It has been reported that Samsung may have also given up hope that the technology will ever be ready for use and might, instead, go the Face ID route. A patent filed in Korea for not just an in-display fingerprint sensor but a pressure sensitive one even says otherwise. It just might not happen in time for the Galaxy S9 in early 2018.

Galaxy S9 won’t have screen fingerprint scanner, says confident leak

Galaxy S9 won’t have screen fingerprint scanner, says confident leak

It seems that makers of fingerprint sensors for smartphones might soon find themselves in a tough spot. Well-known leakster UniverseIce claims 100% certainty that the Galaxy S9 will not have an on-screen fingerprint scanner yet again. Given there are very little options around, that would mean that either Samsung keeps its oddly-placed rear fingerprint scanner or, at the risk of being called a copycat yet again, implement face recognition instead.

LG V30 fingerprint scanner fails when heavily scratched

LG V30 fingerprint scanner fails when heavily scratched

JerryRigEverything is back and he’s got his own LG V30 in his hands. The last time Zack Nelson was seen with the smartphone was when LG flew him over for a sponsored teardown and look into the V30’s prized cameras. Now the YouTuber has bought his own unit with no strings attached for the sole purpose of our entertainment education. He subjects the LG V30 to his usual trinity of stress tests and the smartphone survives as you would expect. Except for one minor, and unexpected, thing.

Galaxy Note 9 will go with under-display fingerprint scanner, says Kuo

Ming-chi Kuo is more famous for his analysis and predictions on Apple products, though some think he's been losing steam of late. He has also dabbled on Android devices recently, and now he has word on what Samsung might be planning next year. While he thinks that Android devices are heading the way of Apple's Face ID and TrueDepth camera, Samsung is still pushing through, at least temporarily, with the under-display optical fingerprint sensor, which might debut in the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy S8 owner “fixed” its most annoying misfeature

Galaxy S8 owner “fixed” its most annoying misfeature

The Galaxy S8 was almost perfect. Its one glaring flaw was its fingerprint scanner. Never mind the off-center position that has resulted in many a smudge to the camera, the scanner, being really just a flat, non-tactile surface, was hard to locate with your finger. Owner Quinn Nelson managed to fix that and surround the sensor with a somewhat discrete perimeter around the sensor to make it easier to find. Amusingly, he had to break it before actually “fixing” it.
