Vivo X21 UD is what the iPhone X could have been

Vivo X21 UD is what the iPhone X could have been

There are two things about that iPhone X that will never stop to be controversial: its notch and its removal of any fingerprint scanner in favor of Face ID. The former was by necessity but the latter, no matter how much Apple denies it, was due to the unavailability of in-display fingerprint scanners at that time. What if Apple had waited a year longer? What would the iPhone X have been like? Now you longer have to wonder because the Vivo X21 UD has just answered it for you.

Galaxy Note 9 won’t have in-display fingerprint scanner, Kuo

The Galaxy S9 is barely two weeks old but rumors of what the Galaxy Note 9 may or may not have are already starting to circulate. Given how the Galaxy S9 was more of a laid-back, incremental improvement, many will perhaps be interested to see if the Galaxy Note 9 will shake up things like its predecessors have. Without blowing up, of course. The one feature that could set it apart, however, might still not be ready, according to the famed Ming-chi Kuo.

Vivo X20 Play UD in-display fingerprint scanner secrets revealed

Vivo X20 Play UD in-display fingerprint scanner secrets revealed

A long time coming, Synaptics finally launched late last year the first ever commercial in-display fingerprint sensor. Jumping immediately on the opportunity to be different, Vivo equipped its new X20 Play UD with the never before seen feature. JerryRigEverything demonstrated how users didn’t have to worry about scratches on the display but had to be extra careful not to break the screen. But since that was broken anyway, the YouTube channel’s Zack Nelson got to work in tearing down the phone to reveal the sensor’s secrets.

Vivo X20 Plus UD in-display fingerprint scanner survives scratches

Vivo X20 Plus UD in-display fingerprint scanner survives scratches

In-display fingerprint scanners have been hailed as the optimal solution to bezel-less screens. At least over face or iris recognition or even placing the sensor on the phone’s back. But by putting it under the display’s glass, the fingerprint scanner naturally becomes subject to that glass’ own vulnerabilities. JerryRigEverything took a Vivo X20 Plus UD, the first and so far only phone to have that feature, and subjected it to his usual durability torture test. This time, however, he put a very special emphasis on that hidden sensor.

Galaxy Note 9 in-display fingerprint scanner to be a no show again

Galaxy Note 9 in-display fingerprint scanner to be a no show again

The mobile tech industry is known for being fast: fast deployments, fast turnovers, and fast changes. News and rumors about mobile devices also change fast, or even faster. We just recently saw signs pointing to the possibility that the Galaxy Note 9 will finally, at long last, bear that feature Samsung had been waiting for since 2016. Those, however, were really just signs, and now Korean media is reporting that the in-display fingerprint scanner once again won’t be a possibility this year. At least not for Samsung.

Lenovo Fingerprint Manager has a terrible security flaw

Lenovo Fingerprint Manager has a terrible security flaw

Intel may have set the tone of 2018 with its Meltdown and Spectre double whammy. While security flaws are, of course, nothing new, but now a lot more attention, including from mainstream media, is being given to them. Lenovo’s newest problem might not be as damning as Intel’s but it might equally be for those owning certain ThinkPad PCs. According to the manufacturer’s bulletin, its fingerprint manager software has a bug that could potentially give hackers easy access to those computers, even when user credentials are encrypted.

Vivo’s in-display fingerprint scanning Android phone arrives (but you don’t want it)

The first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, the Vivo X20 Plus UD, has launched, but even if you could buy it you probably don't want it. The new smartphone - or, more accurately, its biometric system, which is branded Clear ID - made headlines at CES 2018 earlier this month, as the first production device to bake the fingerprint security into the touchscreen itself.

JDI transparent glass fingerprint scanner could come to phones

JDI transparent glass fingerprint scanner could come to phones

JDI, short for Japan Display Inc, is probably best known for being one of the biggest LCD makers in the market. But with that market slowly shifting over to OLED panels, JDI needs to adapt as well. In addition to investing in OLED panel development, it is now breaking into other businesses, like the sensor business. And its first product is an intriguing one. It has announced one of the few if not the first fingerprint sensor embedded not in a display but in transparent glass.

Vivo X20 Plus with in-display fingerprint sensor launch details

Vivo X20 Plus with in-display fingerprint sensor launch details

Vivo may not be one of the most well-known Chinese smartphone brands across the globe, but it is definitely one of the most adventurous. It was one of the first to make the world’s thinnest smartphone (back then only 0.7 cm thick) and was one of the first to jump on 6 GB of RAM and deca-core processors. And this week it will be making history again by becoming the first to use the in-display fingerprint sensor technology that should have been in the Galaxy S8 and iPhone X first.

Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

There were no sensational new smartphones announced at CES this year, but there is one that is at least promising to do that very soon. No, not the Galaxy S9 or any foldable phone. Chinese OEM Vivo, which some might be surprised to know is one of the world’s top 5 phone makers, is showing of what is still a prototype of a smartphone that is ready for mass production. But while the smartphone itself might be a bit nondescript at this point, it has one feature no other smartphone has yet: a fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen.

Android in 2018: Trends and predictions

It's the start of the new year so, naturally, it's time to dust off those crystal balls and magic 8-balls. And while we're no Nostradamus, we can still do a bit of intelligent guessing on what will happen next based on what has come to pass. And if 2017 is any indication, it looks like we're going to be in for a rather fun and, at the same time, rough 2018 in Android land. Here are some of the new things that could come our way this year, in no particular order.

Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

Human Interface Device (HID) expert Synaptics might be grasping at straws to salvage what it can from its much-delayed in-display fingerprint sensor. It recently announced that the sensor, the Clear ID FS9500, has gone into mass production with one of the five Tier 1 smartphone makers in the world. Not leaving much time for a guessing game, Synaptics has finally revealed who that OEM is, and it is none other than Vivo who, just a few months ago, flaunted Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead.
