On-screen fingerprint sensors are not coming this year

We just passed the half year mark, but it’s almost all too clear that fingerprint sensors embedded in smartphone displays aren’t going to be a thing in 2017. Even though the flagships for late 2017 have yet to hit the market, it’s far too late already for them to include such a novel and untested technology. Sources familiar with matters claim that both Apple and Samsung have given up commercializing what would have been one of the major features of the year. All because they may have bitten of more than they could chew, and probably too soon at that.

Kensington VeriMark Fingerprint Key locks your laptop with USB

Kensington VeriMark Fingerprint Key locks your laptop with USB

This year is the year of fingerprints for security - if it weren't already abundantly clear, here's another bit of proof. This is the VeriMark Fingerprint Key by Kensington. This device is just about as simple as a fingerprint scanner gets - or as simple as a fingerprint scanner gets when it's not already embedded into a device. This fingerprint scanner is a USB dongle - and it lets the user log in to their notebook.

Five cheap smartphones with a fingerprint sensor (mid-2017)

Five cheap smartphones with a fingerprint sensor (mid-2017)

Modern smartphones look a bit different than ones from just a few years ago: there's the double rear cameras, of course, but more pervasive is the fingerprint sensor. A fingerprint sensor built into a phone offers a highly convenient form of security, but is also becoming an important component in making mobile payments. While a fingerprint sensor is included on all the big flagship handsets, those tend to cost $600 or more. Can you get fingerprint sensor on a (much) cheaper phone? Yes, yes you can.

Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is Vivo’s secret weapon

Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is Vivo’s secret weapon

Although fingerprint scanners hiding underneath glass displays is quite the hot topic in smartphones these days, the dream isn't actually new. It has been around a few years back and some even had nearly working solutions. One of those is Qualcomm and it is now reminding everyone of that. At MWC Shanghai, the mobile chip maker will be showing off its latest ultrasonic fingerprint scanner running underneath the display of an actual commercial smartphone. And, in a way, it will be showing Samsung what it might be missing out on.

Vivo might be the first to have onscreen fingerprint scanner

Vivo might be the first to have onscreen fingerprint scanner

One of the advantages that Chinese smartphone makers have is that they are able to take bigger risks and jump on fads faster than more mainstream giants. And when it comes to jumping on fads, there is probably no OEM quicker or bolder than Vivo. The company was one of the first to reach the thinnest mark and was one of the first to come out with 6 GB of RAM. Now it might also be the first to have a fingerprint sensor embedded in the screen, beating Samsung and Apple to the punch.

Galaxy Note 8 skips onscreen fingerprint sensor due to this flaw

Galaxy Note 8 skips onscreen fingerprint sensor due to this flaw

It seems that the evidence is piling about the Galaxy Note 8's lack of an optical fingerprint sensor hiding underneath the screen. It was already accepted, though somewhat begrudgingly, that the technology didn't make it in time for the Galaxy S8's earlier release. Then it seems that the Galaxy Note 8's alo earlier launch is going to force Samsung to cut corners. According a post on Weibo, the reason might actually go much deeper, because of a critical flaw that has yet to be properly fixed.

Microsoft Modern Keyboard has a Fingerprint ID scanner

Microsoft Modern Keyboard has a Fingerprint ID scanner

While fingerprint scanners are becoming more common in mobile devices, even mid-range smartphones, traditional computers still have a hard time catching up. Never mind new and upcoming laptops, desktops or older laptops that don't have any hardware to support that feature. Microsoft has finally come up with a solution and all you need is to replace your favorite keyboard. It has just announced the Microsoft Modern Keyboard, which looks exactly like the relatively new Surface Keyboard, except it has an extra key hiding a fingerprint scanner.

The big iPhone 8 Touch ID question may just have been answered

The big iPhone 8 Touch ID question may just have been answered

It's already a given that Apple wants to give the iPhone 8 the biggest possible display for 2017, but the jury is still out on where that leaves its fingerprint sensor. Getting rid of the home button has obvious benefits, but a rear-mounted Touch ID scanner is ergonomically questionable, while integrating it into the Retina display is technologically tricky. Now, another way for Apple to slim the new iPhone's bezels and maximize screen real-estate without sacrificing Touch ID has emerged, an alternative to baking the sensor into the display itself.

Galaxy Note 8 might disappoint in one major way after all

Galaxy Note 8 might disappoint in one major way after all

Perhaps it was too soon to celebrate the Galaxy Note 8's best features. Or maybe we will still end up being pleasantly surprised. Such are the inherent risks of relying unconfirmed sources. And yet here's one more. According to Korean media, Samsung might disappoint fans for a second time this year, with the Galaxy Note 8 now said to not have a fingerprint scanner under the screen yet again.

Galaxy S8 fingerprint scanner becomes a home button with this app

Galaxy S8 fingerprint scanner becomes a home button with this app

Almost all smartphones these days that have a fingerprint sensor hides it under the home button. In other words, in most cases the home button and fingerprint sensor are in a single spot. The Galaxy S8, however, doesn't have the convenience, which made it rather awkward, if not annoying for some users. Fortunately, Android's openness and developer community have yielded Fingertouch, an open source utility that turns the rear fingerprint scanner into a capacitive home button, but with a catch.

MasterCard now has a fingerprint-protected card

Fingerprint sensors are now everywhere. Once the stuff of science fiction and spy movies, the biometric system now unlocks smartphones, laptops, and credit cards. Yes, credit cards. That is, if MasterCard’s pilot test is successful. The financial services giant has just announced that it has kicked off test in South Africa for a “next generation” card that combines the usual chips you find in cards today with a biometric sensor that promises more secure transactions and less opportunities for fraud.
