Mobile in 2019: upcoming smartphone trends

2018 has ended and 2019 has begun. And while most end-of-the-year posts usually and rightfully look back on what has transpired in the past, we cannot forever walk forward with our heads turned backward. 2019 will be an interesting year for the mobile industry, smartphones specifically, not because of how many new things there will be. Instead, it will be interesting exactly because there might not be enough of those novelties. Here are some of the things we expect to see, or in some cases not see, in smartphones in 2019 and beyond.

Android phones’ face recognition fooled by 3D printed head, report says

Android phones’ face recognition fooled by 3D printed head, report says

With fingerprint sensors disappearing, either behind screens or, in the case of the iPhone, completely, there is a great deal of attention and scrutiny being placed on face recognition. Although most of the tests have moved past using photos or even images displayed on a phone screen, there is no expense spared for trying to dupe this new breed of face recognition technologies. A new report uses a carefully crafted 3D printed head to test the iPhone X and four Android phones. And the results, while disappointing, were hardly surprising.

iPhone Face ID: police warned not to look at screens to protect login attempts

The issue of law enforcement and their need to unlock someone's smartphone is a complicated one, both technically and ethically. It turns out Apple's Face ID devices, like the iPhone X and iPhone XS, are only making this more difficult. A new leak has revealed that a forensics company is teaching police to not look at the screens of suspects' iPhones with Face ID, in turn ensuring they get as many chances as possible to unlock the device.

2018 iPad Pro still coming with these features in tow

2018 iPad Pro still coming with these features in tow

Apple’s iPhone XS event last month was almost everything that we’ve expected except for one thing. Well, two if you count the still MIA AirPower wireless charging pad. The anticipated new iPad Pros were nowhere to be seen, disappointing some fans of the larger iOS device. Fret not, however, since Apple will reportedly have an event this month dedicated especially for its professional slates and it could very well be the biggest change the iPad Pro line has seen since the very first iPad Pro.

New iPad Pro still coming and might be better than expected

New iPad Pro still coming and might be better than expected

Apple’s iPhone XS event, while expected, may have disappointed some Apple fans. Especially those who expected more than just a new iPhone or a new Apple Watch. Especially those who were wishing for a new iPad Pro. It might be too early to give up all hope, though, because new hints are popping up pointing to exactly that, probably next month even. But even better, the new iPad Pro might not be as bad as some might have thought it would be.

Next iPad Pro said to be smaller, drop headphone jack, move Smart Connector

While most of the recent Apple rumors and speculation have focused on this year's iPhone lineup and the addition of a fullscreen LCD model, there's reason to believe we'll also be seeing new iPad Pro models for 2018. Along with the expectation that the upcoming iPads will include the iPhone X's FaceID technology, there's evidence suggesting the tablets will be dropping the standard 3.5mm headphone jack, as well as getting smaller all around.

Galaxy Tab S4 Intelligent Scan to compete with new iPad Pro

Galaxy Tab S4 Intelligent Scan to compete with new iPad Pro

There are only a few remaining notable Android tablets left in the market, which gives Apple a huge advantage in that market. It might widen the gap even further if rumors of the upcoming Face ID enabled iPad Pro are true. Unsurprisingly, Samsung might try to preempt that with its upcoming Galaxy Tab S4. Also unsurprisingly, it will try to outdo that key feature. That raises the question of whether Samsung’s Intelligent Scan will be enough, especially since the tablet apparently lacks a fingerprint scanner.

iPad with Face ID confirmed by iOS 12 AvatarKit

Some might still find the idea either too good to be true or too ridiculous, but an iPad with no home button or Touch ID might very well be due soon. And Apple itself has provided that evidence. No, there is no leaked device but Apple did provided iOS 12 to developers and beta testers already. And in that beta form was hidden a version of AvatarKit that supports the iPad’s large screen. And with AvatarKit comes the need for a TrueDepth camera, which ultimately means Face ID.

Vivo Time-of-Flight 3D sensing tech challenges Apple Face ID

Vivo Time-of-Flight 3D sensing tech challenges Apple Face ID

Vivo has some crazy ideas and it’s not afraid to use them. It wasn’t content to put an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo X20 UD, it had to turn half the screen into one as well. Plus, it moved the front camera out of the bezel and into a motorized sliding popup. It might bring it back to the front, though, at least to make its latest innovation possible. It’s simply calling it the Vivo TOF (time of flight) 3D Sensing Technology and it’s issuing a challenge to Apple’s own tech.

Apple has given its Genius tech support and third-party repair centers permission to issue complete iPhone X replacement units, after identifying a frustrating issue with its Face ID system.
