Swiftmoji brings predictive emoji keyboards to Android and iOS

The use of emoji is something that only seems to get more popular by the day, but as the popularity of emoji rises, so too do the sheer number of them. After all, there are just so many emoji to use these days that it can be difficult to find the perfect one for what you're trying to say, even though you know it's out there. SwiftKey recognizes this struggle, and today rolled out a new emoji prediction app for iOS and Android, aptly named Swiftmoji.

Facebook patents system that turns your face into emoji

Emoji are the spices with which you flavor your chats and texts. They add a bit of unspoken context to otherwise plain sentences. Are you saying something in a humorous way? Stick your tongue out at someone and they might get the hint. Wink, smile, scream...there's an emoji for every occasion. Facebook, though, might be looking to take things a little further, replacing the cartoon faces with a small copy of your own.

Latest Android N preview includes more human-looking emoji

Google has released a new developer preview of this year's big Android update, currently dubbed Android N, complete with several new features. The two most noticeable changes — for users, that is — are launcher shortcuts, which make it easier to jump to specific section or feature within an app, and an overhauled design for emoji. The latter is a bigger change than you might expect, as it shows Google is finally moving away from the yellow blob/slug/poop-like figure for characters representing humans.

Inconsistent emoji designs muddle conversations

Inconsistent emoji designs muddle conversations

Be careful which emojis you're tossing around -- what you're seeing may not be what your compatriot is seeing, and that's how sometimes-comical misunderstandings happen. Emojis on their own are great; the little expressive icons add context and flavor to otherwise bland text with little effort. The problem is the lack of consistency across platforms, and as a new study points out, some emojis lose all meaning in translation.

Oxford Dictionaries picks crying emoji as word of the year

Get ready to feel old, or confused, or crotchety, or any number of the things people are expressing about Oxford Dictionaries’ new word of the year — it’s an emoji. Linguists have waxed poetically about the interesting twist emoji brings to language, and Oxford's newest selection only serves to underscore that unique evolution.
