OWC DEC is an inconspicuous dock for the 2016 MacBook Pro

OWC DEC is an inconspicuous dock for the 2016 MacBook Pro

Among the things the latest MacBook Pros have been criticized for, aside from the debatable battery life, is Apple’s abandonment of traditional ports and connectors in favor of going all out with Type C Thunderbolt 3, which are, in shape and compatibility, USB-C holes. Sure, there are dozens of hubs and extensions out there to remedy that, but those just mean yo have another thing to carry and potentially get lost. OWC, famous for their Mac upgrades and accessories, might have come up with a prettier solution: the OWC DEC. It is practically a storage and port expansion dock that looks like it’s actually part of the MacBook Pro itself.

Will CES 2017 bring the Mac accessories Apple can’t be bothered to make?

CES 2017 is almost upon us, and while the annual Consumer Electronics Show will be dominated by vast televisions and, increasingly, car tech, it's the smaller gadgets I'm most looking forward to. If there's one thing 2016 has taught us, it's that we shouldn't get too attached to our favorite celebrities; if there's a second thing, though, it's that the brave new dongle world we live in is surprisingly poorly populated. Yes, Apple, I'm looking at you.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock returns MacBook Pro ports Apple removed

The long-awaited MacBook Pro refresh turned out to also be the perhaps the most controversial. Apple giveth, and Apple taketh away. Even worse for the entry-level model that only has two such ports. For those with port anxiety, OWC is offering a fix in the form of its Thunderbolt 3 Dock that offers 13, yes read that, 13, ports just for the price of one port on your MacBook Pro.

A simple fix for the new MacBook Pro’s big problem

A simple fix for the new MacBook Pro’s big problem

Courage is a double-edged sword, and while consumers may have taken the death of the iPhone 7 headphone jack in their stride, professionals aren't being so generous with the new MacBook Pro. Apple's decision to ditch almost all the legacy ports on its flagship notebook was done in the name of ushering in widespread adoption of Thunderbolt 3 and enabling a thinner machine. However, while Thunderbolt 3 may undoubtedly be a better connector than the bevy of sockets along the edge of the old MacBook Pro, the Cupertino firm's decision to go slim has frustrated many who have legacy devices to plug in, and who were hoping for a more significant power upgrade.

Forget MateBook, Huawei made the perfect MacBook gadget

The world is full of mysteries, but the question simmering among many is why Apple is still yet to produce a USB-C dock for the Retina MacBook. The port-light ultraportable has demonstrated its commitment to the USB-C spirit with two generations resolutely sticking to the idea that a single port is sufficient, but salvation for those with a handful of things to connect comes from a perhaps unlikely source.
