TiVo Android TV might be coming next month

TiVo Android TV might be coming next month

While connected TVs are becoming more common, there isn’t really much of a platform war going on in that space unlike, say, smartphones and smartwatches. Almost everyone has their own smart TV implementation but the quickest way for smaller players to get into the game is usually by adopting an existing one like Android TV. Long-time DVR giant TiVo promised to do just that earlier this year but it seems like its first actual Android TV product won’t debut until next month, at least based on a lone FCC filing.

NVIDIA SHIELD keeps the features coming in Experience 7.2 upgrade

NVIDIA SHIELD keeps the features coming in Experience 7.2 upgrade

One could argue that given how few NVIDIA SHIELD units there are, it’s relatively easy for NVIDIA to update it. That said, one can also argue that given how few NVIDIA SHIELD units there are, NVIDIA could have also just as easily abandoned them in obsolescence. Fortunately, that isn’t the case and the latest SHIELD Experience 7.2 upgrade not only fixes or updates existing apps, it even brings new experiences, including Amazon Music.

OnePlus TV is the company’s next big thing, coming next year

OnePlus TV is the company’s next big thing, coming next year

OnePlus’ success was nothing short of a miracle. In an overly saturated smartphone market dominated by Samsung and Apple, a no-name startup dared to challenge the status quo with a premium smartphone at half the price. The company has grown a lot since then but, aside from a short drone stint and wireless earbuds, it hasn’t grown out of its mobile roots. Founder Pete Lau, however, thinks now is the right time to brings its magic to another saturated, and some may say dying, market: TVs.

NVIDIA SHIELD update brings free GeForce NOW beta and more

Say what you want about NVIDIA but its commitment to its SHIELD Android TV devices is perhaps unprecedented in the Android world. Sure, it has already abandoned its SHIELD Portable handheld and its SHIELD Tablets saw their last updates in March, but even those were delivered long after most OEMs would have stopped providing updates. Its real SHIELD baby, however, is the SHIELD Android TV consoles and those are now getting an update that does more than just add new features or apps. It also prolongs their use by letting them “play” PC games on TVs.

JBL Link Bar pre-order starts for Android TV soundbar

Neither Google Assistant nor Android TV is exactly new. You’d see one or the other in this or that new smart product. In fact, Google Assistant is pretty much part and parcel of the Android TV experience. But what about a non-TV Android TV with Google Assistant device? Well, that’s the rather unconventional proposition that the JBL Link Bar made with the first ever Google Assistant-enabled Android TV soundbar. With pre-orders now starting, it’s finally time to see whether people will actually buy that idea.

Philips Android TV: almost everyone gets an Oreo cookie

Philips Android TV: almost everyone gets an Oreo cookie

Those complaining about the disappointing state of Android updates for smartphones actually have it easier compared to, say, Android TV. While Google has not abandoned it the way it has tablets, at least not yet, updates are not only slow but also rare even. You don’t hear much about it because there’s not much to talk about. Philips, however, might be changing the game just a bit by bringing the latest Android Oreo update to almost all of its Android TVs dating all the way back to 2014.

NVIDIA SHIELD TV Android Oreo rollout isn’t going smoothly

NVIDIA SHIELD TV Android Oreo rollout isn’t going smoothly

Despite, or probably because of, not having Android smartphones, NVIDIA has had an amazing track record when it comes to pushing out updates, both maintenance as well as major features. Last month, it started the process for putting Android 8.0 Oreo on its SHIELD TVs via Experience Upgrade version 7.0. Now it is making that available for all users but not everyone seems to be happy about the quality of its latest update.
