Animal Crossing: New Leaf receiving amiibo support later this year

Nintendo is taking a quick break from all of the Pokemon GO hysteria to give us a truly surprising announcement: Animal Crossing: New Leaf will be getting amiibo support this autumn. Obviously you'd expect Nintendo to throw a ton of support behind amiibo considering their popularity, but the surprising bit about this announcement is that Animal Crossing: New Leaf was released in North America more than three years ago.

Shovel Knight’s amiibo can be read while still in the package

When you buy a collectable figure, you've got a couple of options. You can take it out of the packaging, and enjoy playing with it, or leave it in the box, to remain in mint condition for all of its days. Unfortunately, if you're into collecting amiibo, you don't have much of a choice if you actually want to use them for their intended purpose. Thankfully there is at least one that you can use, while still leaving it sealed in its packaging.

Nintendo sees surprise profit: has Splatoon, 3DS, amiibo to thank

Nintendo detailed its latest quarterly financial details today, revealing a surprise upswing in revenue as quarterly sales increased more than 20-percent and net profit hit 8.28 billion yen (versus last year’s 9.9 billion yen loss for the same quarter). Nintendo largely has a combination of weaker yen and a sharp rise in new game sales to thank, the latter of which was led by the widespread success of Splatoon. As expected, amiibo — which gained several new figures over the past couple months — also helped the video game company.

Dark Pit amiibo arrives at Best Buy this month

Pre-orders have been cancelled, a shipment truck has been hijacked, and websites have been crashed all in the name of getting the latest lineup. Enter Dark Pit, the next amiibo to arrive as part of Nintendo’s rollouts this year. The figurine will be hitting digital shelves at Best Buy soon, but the retailer has announced ahead of time that it is instituting some ordering limitations to (hopefully) quell the chaos.

Nintendo’s Amiibo cross over to Skylanders

This week Nintendo crossed a barrier - they've announced Amiibo for Skylanders. These Amiibo will be cross-platform functional - cross-game, that is to say, don't cross your fingers for Amiibo working outside of the Nintendo hardware universe just yet. These characters work with Amiibo abilities as they always would, but also working in the new game Skylanders SuperChargers. The first Amiibos introduced this way are Donkey Kong and Bowzer. These new characters will take on new abilities and forms - and they'll have their own special vehicles usable in the Skylanders universe, too.

Demand has been so high that Nintendo promised to up production in the midst of an Amiibo shortage. Amiibo fans are eagle eyed when it comes to looking for new products.
