Sony PSN Pass targets second-hand game buyers

Sony has confirmed it will be using a new system called PSN Pass to authenticate online access to certain new games, a move that is being seen as the company's latest attempt to undermine the second-hand games market. Resistance 3, set to be released in September, will be the first title to use PSN Pass Gamasutra reports, with further implementation being decided on a game-by-game basis.

Sony knew PSN hack scale earlier than admitted tips government report

Sony has been accused of purposefully delaying its public announcements regarding the extent of the PlayStation Network hack, with official Japanese government documentation suggesting that gaming chief Kaz Hirai gave incorrect information in his May 1 public statement. According to the report, which Kyodo news acquired under a freedom of information request, Sony internally confirmed on April 25 (US time) that a "fairly large amount of data" had been stolen by hackers; however, Sony's press release the following day suggested only that the company could not "rule out the possibility" that personal data had been leaked.

Sony has detailed its Welcome Back program to UK users of the PlayStation Network, sending out emails to subscribers explaining what fraud protection and other aspects they'll receive. The European scheme follows the US offering, consisting of both free access to services, some downloadable games and a year's subscription to an anti-fraud service.

Codemasters Hacked, User Info Compromised

If you're a fan of British video game developing, you know exactly what Codemasters is. This is The Codemasters Software Company Limited, aka one of the oldest video game developer companies in the world, having in the last 10 years established themselves in the USA as well with games such as DiRT3. In an email to customers today, Codemasters have noted that they've had an unauthorized entry into their codemasters.com webpage that has subsequently made the company have to take the entire site offline. Though they did so in order to stop the intruders from accessing information from user accounts specifically, these hackers have done so anyway.

Full restoration of Qriocity service starts today for all territories but Japan

Sony is still digging its way from under the aftermath of the breach of its PlayStation network. Much of the PSN is back online in most countries though some are still without service. Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Corp announced today that the full restoration of Qriocity service will be made today in all territories where the service operates except one. That one territory that the service will remain unavailable in is Japan.

Users of the Sony PlayStation Network have had a bad month or so now. First, a hack took the system offline. Later we learned that just about all the data users put into their accounts had been stolen, and then when Sony put up a way for users to change passwords to secure their accounts again the method used was flawed and open to hacks. Sony announced as a way to soothe the angry PSN users that it would be offering free games and free identity protection for users.

PlayStation Store To Be Back Online May 24th

Despite a cheerful announcement last Saturday from Sony exec Kazuo Hirai that the PlayStation Network was back online, the network had another hiccup when reports found that its password resetting process had a security loophole. Sony has since resolved the issue, but has yet to confirm when the PlayStation Store will be back online. An intercepted memo that Sony sent to game developers and publishing partners now reveals that the PlayStation Store should return by next Tuesday, May 24th.
