Dear Nintendo: Look at this DIY 3DS-like phone

Dear Nintendo: Look at this DIY 3DS-like phone

This Spring a developer by the name of Lexie Dostal hand-constructed an Android 3DS gaming phone. This device doesn't run 3DS games from Nintendo, but it does look a whole lot like a 3DS handheld gaming system. It actually uses some salvaged 3DS parts, as it were - but it runs an open hardware Android SBC called KitePhone.

Nintendo Direct: Super Smash Bros on Switch, WarioWare, Splatoon 2 DLC

Nintendo Direct: Super Smash Bros on Switch, WarioWare, Splatoon 2 DLC

Nintendo just finished its second Direct presentation of the year and suffice it to say, fans have a lot to look forward to across all the company’s gaming devices. Except for the Wii U. The Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS are the stars of the show, with both new games and ports of popular ones. The new titles still coming exclusively to the 3DS reaffirms Nintendo’s commitment to what some presumed would be left by the wayside in the Switch’s wake.

Nintendo Switch eShop has an indie-heavy week ahead of it

Nintendo Switch eShop has an indie-heavy week ahead of it

Tonight's Nintendo Direct will probably preview a number of big name titles from Nintendo and its third-party partners, but right now it's time to focus on some new indie games. Another Thursday has arrived, which means it's time for Nintendo to detail the games that will be heading to the Switch eShop over the course of the next week. While many weeks in 2018 have provided some big ports of well-known titles, that isn't the case with this week.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon review: Second time’s a charm

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon review: Second time’s a charm

A year ago, I reviewed Pokemon Sun and Moon and found that the changes they brought to the long-running (and in many ways stale) Pokemon series were great. After all, Pokemon is not usually a series that makes drastic changes from game to game. Though Pokemon Sun and Moon are completely different than Pokemon Red and Blue, that isn’t the result of some sweeping reinvention, but rather incremental changes that have been implemented over the course of the series. With Pokemon Sun and Moon, Game Freak rethought its approach and took more risks, and the results were very successful.

New Nintendo 3DS production ends in Japan

New Nintendo 3DS production ends in Japan

Well this is interesting: it appears that Nintendo has decided to stop New 3DS production in Japan. This is the second time this year that we've received such an announcement pertaining to Nintendo's hardware. Back in January, shortly before the launch of the Switch, Nintendo stopped production on the Wii U as well.

Nintendo takes Switch and 3DS on the road this summer

If you still need to be sold on the Nintendo Switch, then you might like to know that Nintendo will be taking it on tour this summer. On June 9, Nintendo will kick off its Summer of Play tour, taking the Switch and the 3DS to a number of different cities around the US and giving players the chance to get some hands-on time with them. The roster of games that will be on display is packed with a bunch of hits for both consoles, including Zelda, Mario Kart, and Pokemon.

Nintendo 3DS not forgotten in Nintendo Direct stream

Nintendo 3DS not forgotten in Nintendo Direct stream

Nintendo just held one of its Nintendo Direct live stream press releases and, unsurprisingly, much of the fanfare was focused on its latest Switch handheld console. That, however, doesn't mean it has forgotten about its other gaming handheld. As if reassuring owners that the Nintendo 3DS lives on, the company revealed nearly a dozen titles that will grace the device all throughout the year.

Nintendo’s Pikachu New 3DS XL is quite cute, very yellow

Nintendo’s Pikachu New 3DS XL is quite cute, very yellow

Despite the fact that the Switch is on the horizon, Nintendo says it's committed to supporting the 3DS. We've had some evidence for that continued support through new game reveals, but if that hasn't been enough to ease your worries about the death of the 3DS, then maybe Nintendo's special edition Pikachu New 3DS XL will be.

Nintendo isn’t ditching the 3DS

Nintendo isn’t ditching the 3DS

Nintendo's newly announced Switch is exciting, but begs the question: will the company ditch the Nintendo 3DS? The answer to that is no, at least judging by comments made by Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima during a recent interview. When asked whether the company would discontinue the 3DS in light of the Switch, Kimishima said, "...we think the 3DS can continue in its own form."

It’s time for Nintendo to exit the console business

It’s time for Nintendo to exit the console business

It's time for Nintendo to leave consoles in the past. I've rewritten this opening paragraph multiple times trying to figure out the right way to say that. I've written that there are few surprising things in the gaming industry these days, save for Nintendo, which remains to be a wild card of poor marketing decisions, and that Nintendo's mistakes have proven that it's software, not hardware that people are interested in. Sometimes, though, it's best just to come out and get to the point: Nintendo needs to close the curtains on its hardware business and transition to being a purely software developer.

Nintendo announces New 3DS bundle, adds eight titles to Selects lineup

If you've been thinking of picking up Nintendo's New 3DS, you may want to hold off just a little longer, as the company has announced a new bundle that features a pre-installed copy of Super Mario 3D Land. The bundle comes in at $150, which Nintendo says is the lowest price ever for one of these New 3DS bundles. As a particularly nice bonus, Super Mario 3D Land just so happens to be one of the best games on the 3DS, so starting off your collection with that gem isn't bad at all.

Nintendo’s Q1 earnings report disappoints with Wii U and 3DS sales down

Nintendo’s Q1 earnings report disappoints with Wii U and 3DS sales down

Nintendo has been very hot and cold lately. From the launch of Pokemon GO, which is shaping up to be the most impressive mobile game launch ever and caused Nintendo's stock price to soar, to the inevitable tumble back to Earth as Nintendo tried to temper investor expectations concerning the amount of money it would pull in from the title, Nintendo has been on something of a rollercoaster the past few weeks. The ride isn't over yet, as Nintendo's newest earnings report has hit, and the results for quarter one are disappointing to say the least.
