superMHL A/V specification supports up to 8k video

A new audio/visual specification has been unveiled at CES 2015 called superMHL. This specification is a significant upgrade to the original MHL spec and will deliver higher resolution video and more power for charging among other things. SuperMHL can deliver 40W of power charging and supports up to 8k resolution video at 120 fps. The specification will allow users to link devices like smartphones, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, AVRs, streaming media sticks, and other sources to TVs and displays.

Along with support for 8k video resolution, superMHL also supports Deep Color at bit depths up to 48-bit. A wider color gamut is also supported to allow viewers to see colors more in line with what filmmakers intended. SuperMHL also supports HDR and high definition sound formats.

Dolby Atmos, DTS-UHD, 3D audio, and audio-only sound modes are supported with the new superMHL specification. Advanced connectivity configurations also allow the control of multiple devices via one remote control. Support for content on multiple displays from one connected device is included in the specification.

A reversible connector is now part of the superMHL specification and support for MHL Alt Mode is included for USB Type-C specification. The new specification is being show off at CES 2015 and there is no indication of when we might see products using it at this time.
