Super Smash Bros. Wii U to do away with edge-hoggers

For those of you that've been playing every single Super Smash Bros. game since the first hit the N64, you may very well know about the type of player that hogs the edge. This is the sort of play where a player gets kicked off the side of a level and – barring the player that hangs on the edge to block them – would otherwise be able to flip back up. The next generation of Super Smash Bros. takes care of this nonsensical bit of gameplay.

Speaking from the Miiverse-based Smash Bros. pic of the day, official creator Masahiro Sakurai suggests that things are about to change. The first bit of change will come in the issuing of a new single-player mode feature as shown earlier this week. Next is the bit you're seeing above, where Mario is dishing out some dishonorable justice on the edge-hanging fellow known as Link.

Or so it would seem.

According to Sakurai, the image above shows Link "trumping" Mario's grab. Thusly it would seem that if two players are jumping upward and one grabs first, the other will be able to toss them asunder. This sort of gameplay makes the whole system just that much more difficult to trick.

"There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing ledges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab.

Some other changes include:

-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.

-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage." – Masahiro Sakurai

We'll be continuing to follow the antics of Sakurai and his issuing of news blasts in the form of tiny images for the Miiverse through the next few weeks. Until the next-generation Super Smash Bros. arrives, you can bet your bottom we'll be on top of it. Stick around!
