Super Smash Bros Ultimate's new fighter is an Animal Crossing favorite

Yesterday's Nintendo Direct covered a lot of ground, particularly as it concerns the Switch. The presentation contained coverage of a lot of games we already knew about, along with a few surprises. One of the biggest surprises came at the end, however, as Nintendo announced that a much-loved character from the Animal Crossing series is coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Isabelle, who serves as the assistant and secretary to players in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, will be joining the Super Smash Bros Ultimate roster when the game launches later this year. The trailer that announced her as a fighter doesn't really go into depth when it comes to her move set, but we can see her use some of her abilities nonetheless.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is notable for featuring every fighter from previous games in the series. That means a cast of characters more than 70 strong, which is pretty ridiculous when you consider that the first game only had a grand total of 12. Due the focus on bringing every old fighter back, series director Masahiro Sakurai has said that the number of new fighters might be a bit lower than it has been in the past.

Still, that hasn't stopped Sakurai and his team from revealing new fighters like Ridley from Metroid, Simon (and Richter) Belmont from Castlevania, King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong series, and now Isabelle. That could very well be it as far as new characters go, but we may still get a few new character reveals as we close in on the game's December 7 release date.

On top of announcing that Isabelle is heading to Super Smash Bros, Nintendo also revealed that a mainline Animal Crossing game is currently in development for the Switch. We don't know anything about it yet, but Nintendo says it'll be here next year. While we wait for more details on that, head down to the comments section and tell us what you think about Isabelle's debut in Super Smash Bros.
