What To Do When Your Android Phone's Storage
Is Full
By MONICA J. WHITE
Although some newer Android smartphones no longer support microSD cards for expanded storage, there are many ways to free up space on your device. Before you begin, you should back up any files, photos, or videos from your device onto your Google cloud storage in case you accidentally delete something you wish to save.
You likely have many files you don’t need or use that take up a chunk of your storage, such as photos and videos. The best way to remove them from your Android device is to use the Google Photos app or whichever media app you use, then tap and hold on the photo or video you wish to remove and press Delete at the top.
Much like photos and videos, you may have many unnecessary downloaded files or movies that take up a portion of your storage space. Check your Files folder for video and audio files to delete, and make sure they are permanently deleted, not just moved to trash.
Some apps can take up a lot of space on your phone, especially if they’ve accumulated extra data in their caches, possibly requiring you to delete these programs. From the Google Play Store, tap the Profile icon to find Manage Apps & Devices, where you can select which app to uninstall. Removing the app data and cache is typically done through Settings.
After removing the files and apps, you can check your storage space to see how much is now available by swiping down on your screen, tapping on the cogwheel icon for the settings, and finding an option such as “Device Maintenance” or “Storage.” This screen will also give you a breakdown of which type of file or app takes up the most room if you need to free up more space.
