What Made Plymouth’s Golden Commando Engine So Special
By BRADEN CARLSON
In 1958, Plymouth built the Golden Commando variant of Fury with special features we take for granted today. One of the most outstanding features is the V8 engine.
The V8 has 350 cubic inches of displacement with two Carter four-barrel carburetors. The overhead-valve and cam-in-block pushrod shows the car’s relation to future supercars.
With 305 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque, it was one of the most powerful cars of 1958. The engine sported gold-painted valve covers and a gold air cleaner assembly.
The Golden Commando stands out as an extremely potent and groundbreaking engine for its time. Without it, the groundwork for the modern Hemi V8 may never have been laid.
