What is a Slabtop? Why Half A MacBook Is Becoming So Popular
By DAVID BIXENSPAN
A new fad emerged in early 2022, with people buying MacBooks without functioning displays or cannibalizing their own MacBooks to remove the display to create a “Slabbook.”
Slabbooks allow MacBook users to have a computer with a built-in keyboard/trackpad combo that they can use with a monitor or wirelessly with a TV over AirPlay.
While laptops are convenient for space, they’re not ergonomically designed devices and often lead to head and neck pain. A Slabbook has been seen as a solution to this problem.
A traditional desktop keyboard and trackpad wouldn’t be comfortable for working on a couch, but the keyboard half of a laptop is designed to be used that way.
Macs, in particular, make it easy to wirelessly use a TV as your monitor through AirPlay. Although this method does make it more comfortable to work, you’ll lose some features.
You’ll lose the built-in webcam and wireless screen mirroring will be more difficult, but the biggest issue is that the recovery mode on MacBooks requires the built-in display.
