The Video Game Even Queen Elizabeth II Couldn't Resist
By NADEEM SARWAR
As the world bids goodbye to Queen Elizabeth Il, stories extolling her virtues blanket the internet, but fans may also enjoy recalling a fun side of her personality that rarely received attention — that of a Nintendo-loving monarch. U.K. tabloid Mirror published a story in 2008, claiming the Nintendo Wii game smote the queen after she saw her grandson Prince William playing with it.
If true, her enthusiasm was only matched by her sharp skills in playing the Wii Sports 10-pin bowling game. "Although she is 81, the Queen's hand-eye coordination was as good as somebody half her age," the Mirror reported, citing an unnamed source allegedly from the royal palace, who went so far as to claim the monarch was close to becoming a Nintendo addict.
Impressed by her alleged love for the iconic Wii console, THQ — a now-defunct American video game company — sent a 24-carat gold-plated Nintendo Wii as a gift to Buckingham Palace. The adorned console never reached the queen due to security rules preventing the palace from signing for and accepting the package, even a specially-commissioned extravagant gift for Her Majesty.
