The Chevrolet Chevette Never Stood A Chance
By ALEX HEVESY
To compete with smaller Japanese cars entering the market in the 70s, Chevrolet created the Chevette. However, this model would get a mixed reputation over the years.
First released in 1976 and retailing for $2,899 for the base model, the Chevette was somewhat well-regarded by reviewers.
Most Chevettes possessed a 1.6-liter four-cylinders capable of producing 60 horsepower, with the 1977 model hitting 60 mph in 15 seconds.
While its performance left much to be desired, the interior offered flexibility for cargo. The four-door version of the hatchback came out in 1978 and became relatively popular.
The Chevette’s downfall and mixed reputation resulted from the car mainly remaining unchanged between 1975 to 1987 while more competitors entered the market.
