Mitsubishi's Best Engines Ranked By Reliability
By MARK COWLEY
4N14
Living up to Mitsubishi's reputation for being able to withstand years of hard use, the 4N14 four-cylinder diesel engine remains relatively efficient and dependable.
It has been featured in Mitsubishi's ASX crossover and current-generation Delica minivans. Unfortunately, the Delica isn't available in the United States.
4G94
One of the largest variants of the 4G family, the 4G94 engine could produce up to 144 horsepower and was used in a variety of Mitsubishi models throughout the '00s.
It would continue to be used after its original Mitsubishi production run, with Chinese carmaker Hawtai continuing to produce it until 2015.
4G69
The Mitsubishi 4G69 has been in production since 2003 and is still used today in various forms. Some owners reported getting up to 300,000 miles out of the engine.
Although Mitsubishi stopped using it in 2013, it continues to feature in a range of Chinese-manufactured cars and vans, like the Great Wall and Maxus.
6B31
The 6B31 has only been used on two Mitsubishi models: the Outlander since 2006 and the Pajero Sport since 2010. It remains in production in both cars today in certain markets.
The engine isn't without flaws. There have been reports of oil leaks and carbon buildup, but regular and comprehensive maintenance should prevent issues in most cases.
4G64
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder 4G64 engine has been around since 1985, being used in various Mitsubishi models, as well as Hyundai and Chrysler.
Its average lifespan varied between models, but it could generally reach more than 200,000 miles with proper maintenance.
