Is A New Flagship Android Phone Really Worth $1,000?
By JULIAN VAN DER MERWE
The prices of smartphones have been on a steady rise since the earliest versions first caught the public’s eye, and now it’s not uncommon for these devices to cost well over $1,000 for the higher-end models. Samsung’s most recent entry in the S23 family, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, is their most expensive unit starting at $1,199.99, but is its eye-watering price actually worth it?
This top-tier device boasts many impressive features, but the ones that are most likely to grab the average consumer are its quad-camera system and 5,000 mAh battery. The upgraded camera gives you a setup with a 200 MP wide-angle module; a 10 MP 10x optical zoom unit; a 10 MP, 3x optical zoom lens; and a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor, along with a battery that lasts 25+ hours.
While the Galaxy S23 Ultra and other $1,000 flagships offer top-of-the-line specs, cheaper alternatives feature cameras that still provide excellent performances. Although they lack the S23 Ultra’s camera versatility and zoom capabilities, the Google Pixel 7 and the Galaxy S23 deliver quality photos for a substantially reduced price. But whether it’s worth the cost depends solely on the buyer.
