Here's Why Hydrogen Cars Were Doomed to Fail
By RAY FERNANDEZ
Around 2010, hydrogen cars were seen as game-changers when they took on their fully electric counterparts to dominate the market, but lithium-powered cars rapidly outgunned them. Why did major car brands like VW phase out all hydrogen models?
The energy in an all-electric vehicle runs directly from the battery through the wires to the engine, with very little loss of power. However, in a hydrogen car, the energy was not as efficient in its journey to the engine and resulted in a much greater loss of power.
In comparison to its EV competitors, hydrogen cars were not only less energy efficient but more expensive. Perhaps worse, consumers had concerns about the safety of hydrogen vehicles and the lack of hydrogen charging stations. Simply put, EV technology overpowered hydrogen cars.
