Every BMW 3 Series Generation Ranked Slowest To Fastest

7. 1st Generation
The original BMW 3 Series, which lasted from 1975 to 1982, emerged during a period of new automotive regulations and technological advances.
The higher-end models have a top speed of 106 mph and 143 horsepower, so the first generation 3 Series required 11.7 seconds to hit 60 mph.
6. 2nd Generation
The second generation 3 Series, model designation E30, improved the vehicle’s interior appearance and its engineering. This model lasted from 1982 to 1991.
While the base model had 170 horsepower, the rare BMW 320iS model had an output of 195 horsepower and could hit 60 mph in 8.7 seconds with a top speed of 132.
5. 3rd Generation
The 1991 to 1998 E36 is one of BMW’s most underrated vehicles. The ’90s saw changes to its exterior and the inclusion of new interior features, like heated seats.
With its 2.8-liter engine providing 193 horsepower, the third-generation 3 Series could reach a top speed of 142 mph and go 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds.
4. 4th Generation
BMW introduced the fourth-gen 3 Series in 1998, which lasted until 2005. Along with styling and engineering changes, BMW also increased the car’s dimensions.
Although the entry-level car kept the 1.8-liter engine, premium models received a 3.0-liter straight-six with 231 horsepower and a top speed of 157 mph.
3. 7th Generation
The current generation of the 3 Series, which began in 2019, has evolved into an advanced machine full of luxury accessories and technological conveniences.
Excluding the hybrid setup, the new 3 Series engines range up to 3.3-liter straight-six with 265 horsepower and can go up to 162 mph.
