Steam Holiday Sale 2017: 10 great games that cost $10 or less

One of the best things about being a PC gamer is the sheer number of massive sales. We're smack in the middle of Steam's Holiday Sale for 2017, and whether you've got a stack of gift cards to burn through or you'd like the build out your library on the cheap, there are plenty of excellent deals to be had. A large number of great games have been discount to $10 or less, and what follows are 10 of the best.

1. Stardew Valley ($9.99)

Honestly, most PC gamers should have expected this game to make an appearance just from the title alone. Stardew Valley's overnight fame has been inescapable ever since it launched back in early 2016. Putting you in the shoes of a corporate drone-turned-farmer, Stardew Valley is all about creating a profitable farm and building relationships with your new neighbors in the quaint Pelican Town. Stardew Valley has attracted hordes of fans in time since it launched, and it's easy to see why – it's addicting, fun, and even heartwarming at parts.

2. Enter the Gungeon ($7.49)

If, on the other hand, you already know the farm life isn't for you, you might find more to love in the bullet-filled rooms of Enter the Gungeon. A rougelike crossed with the bullet hell games that used to be so popular, Enter the Gungeon hits all the right notes: fast paced, run-and-gun action; an excellent soundtrack; wonderful pixel graphics inspired by the 16-bit era; and ridiculous enemies trying to kill you. This is a game where bullets literally shoot you. This one isn't to be missed by fans of roguelikes, action games, or guns.

3. Don’t Starve Together ($8.99)

While Don't Starve and its standalone multiplayer spin-off, Don't Starve Together, weren't the first survival games, they're absolutely some of the best. In Don't Starve Together, you and your friends will be dropped in a mysterious world and tasked with staving off hunger, injury, and insanity as long as possible. Doing so won't be easy, as the world around you is filled with magical and surreal beings who seem to want only to kill you. Inspired as much by Tim Burton as Minecraft, Don't Starve Together is game you and your friends must check out if you consider yourselves to be survival enthusiasts.

4. Hidden Folks ($5.59)

This one may kind of be cheating, considering it costs less that $10 all the time, but at its current price of $5.59, this hidden object game is a must-have for pretty much anyone. If you enjoyed looking through hidden object books like Where's Waldo when you were a kid, then you'll definitely love Hidden Folks. Its hand-drawn visuals are dripping with charm, and it makes for the perfect game when you'd just like relax at the end of a long day.

5. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil ($9.99)

Strange as it may be to see on an old N64 game on here, there's good reason for its presence on this list. Nightdive Studios has done an excellent job in porting these classic Turok games to PC and remastering them for the modern era, and while the original Turok is definitely worth your consideration, Turok 2 is the high point of the series. It's true that it looks a little outdated here in 2017, but if you can get past the somewhat blocky graphics and you happen to like bloody FPS games, you're in for a treat. Nightdive, along with other developers like Beamdog with its Baldur's Gate re-releases, has really set the bar for PC remasters, and this one shouldn't be missed by those who look back on the Turok franchise fondly.

6. Age of Empires II HD ($4.99)

Another classic game that's been given a remaster for modern hardware, Age of Empires II is not only one of the best strategy games money can buy, but it's also one of the best games ever made. Age of Empires II can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other real-time strategy giants like StarCraft, Command and Conquer, and WarCraft, and this HD remake certainly does the original game justice. At $4.99, this game is an absolute steal, as this is a game that will grab you and won't let go for dozens – possibly hundreds – of hours.

6. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ ($2.49)

It's kind of difficult to place Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ in one genre. The classic Pac-Man gameplay nearly everyone is familiar with is still at the center of this release, only it's been sped up to levels that are downright frantic. A perfect game to pick up and play when you don't have a lot of time to devote, Championship Edition's score attack gameplay will definitely keep you coming back for more.

7. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Classic ($9.99)

What's that you say? Electronic Arts is ruining Star Wars? Skip that modern Battlefront 2 and opt for the classic game of the same name instead. It's far less expensive, isn't packed to the brim with microtransactions, somehow has more features and game modes than its 2017 cousin, and best of all, it has functioning multiplayer again thanks to Disney. For $3 and some change, you can stick it to EA and play a Star Wars game that's actually good. What's not to love?

8. Terraria ($4.99)

If you've had a Steam account for any amount of time, there's a good chance you're already played Terraria. If you somehow haven't, though, you need to finally take the plunge and buy it during the Holiday Sale. I've owned this game since it came out back in 2011, and in the time since then, I have played it for nearly 500 hours. It's currently the most played game in my Steam library, and for good reason. In some ways, Terraria is like a 2D Minecraft, but there's more focus on exploration, combat, and progression. It is a wonderful little title that the developers have supported well over the years, doubling the content multiple times through regular updates. I honestly can't think of a way to make $5 go further on Steam at the moment.

9. One Finger Death Punch ($0.99)

Another game that's always less than $10 anyway, One Finger Death Punch deserves a spot in everyone's library. This game offers fast-paced kung fu action that's challenging and addicting, despite the fact that you'll only ever use two buttons. You will be constantly flanked by enemies and it's up to you to time your attacks perfectly, with the ultimately goal to pull off the perfect combo and finish each stage untouched. At a mere 99 cents during the sale, there is no reason to skip this game.

10. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition ($6.79)

Perhaps the best CRPG ever made, Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition is a game that every fantasy lover should play at some point in their life. Don't expect this to be like many modern RPGs, which can sometimes be as big as an ocean but as deep as a puddle – Baldur's Gate II definitely has plenty of depth to go along with its size. Based on the Advanced Dungeon and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset, there's certainly a lot to love for those who enjoy complex rules that set the stage for a lot of customization. If you already love Baldur's Gate II, the Enhanced Edition just makes the game all the more awesome.

Wrap Up

Obviously, there's no lack of excellent games available on Steam, and the list of great games that can be had for less than $10 is mind numbingly long. The games included on this list are by no means the best of the best, but it's hard to go wrong with any of them.
