Star Wars VR game Trials on Tatooine comes to Steam for free

You're only about a day away from being able to experience the world of Star Wars in virtual reality. At the Star Wars Celebration, currently being in London this weekend, Lucasfilm announced that it was releasing the VR game experiment Trials on Tatooine on Steam on Monday, July 18th. The best part is that it's completely free, assuming you have a HTC Vive headset.

Now, keep in mind, Trials on Tatooine isn't a full-fledged game. It really is an "experiment," offering users a cinematic VR experience set in the Star Wars universe. Developed by Industrial Light & Magic's xLab, players get their hands on a lightsaber and are tasked with fighting off a group of Stormtroopers while defending R2-D2.

We got to spend some time with Trials on Tatooine back in March, where Chris Barr noted that while the experience was short, it boasted impressive graphics and was one of the rare times when it felt like you were really wielding a lightsaber, making for a fun VR experience.

It's not clear yet if a full game is being developed based on the demo, but Lucasfilm has noted that the experiment was a way to test VR technology and see if it could be used to deliver both storytelling and interactivity. Overall it seems that Trials on Tatooine has been a big success, so hopefully there will be more in the near future.
