Star Wars' Boba Fett spinoff movie canceled in favor of Mandalorian TV series

The last few years have seen the Star Wars franchise return to the big screen with new films, including several that focus on specific characters or stories unrelated to the main trilogies. One such project that has been in the works is a standalone movie for Boba Fett, the iconic bounty hunter from the original trilogy. Unfortunately that's no longer the case, as Lucasfilm has confirmed that the Boba Fett movie has been canceled.

A Boba Fett spinoff movie has never been officially announced, but there's been talk of its development for several years now, reaching a high earlier this year with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear the project has been shelved, telling Erick Weber of Sirius XM that it's "100% dead."

Still, there's good news for Star Wars fans looking for something new. Kennedy stated that the reason for the film's cancelation is because the studio is now focusing on The Mandalorian, a Jon Favreau-helmed TV series for Disney's upcoming streaming service. While not many details have been revealed yet, this show will be focusing a new, unknown hero, and set in a period of the Star Wars galaxy that's yet to be explored.

It seems the poor reception of Solo earlier this year has caused Disney to re-think its plans for different standalone movies and spinoffs. Of course, the silver lining in this decision is that rather than continuing to revisit existing Star Wars characters, Lucasfilm has the chance to expand the universe and tell new stories.
