'Star Trek: Picard' update: When it'll arrive and how to watch it

In 2018, CBS revealed that it would release another Star Trek series at some point in the future that features Sir Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Few details about the show were provided at the time, but that changed earlier this year with a teaser image and an official name for the series: Star Trek: Picard. Now the company is back with details on when you'll be able to watch it.

CBS debuted its first long trailer for Star Trek: Picard at New York Comic Con (below). In it, fans see Stewart in his iconic role as Picard, as well as teasers of the show's storyline and how the character is brought out of a type of retirement. At nearly three minutes long, viewers see familiar and new characters, various landscapes, dramatic battles, and more.

As previously announced, the series will be made available on CBS All Access, the company's live and on-demand streaming service priced at $5.99/month. The platform already offers Star Trek: Discovery, an original series launched on the service in late 2017.

CBS plans to launch Star Trek: Picard with a 10-episode first season on January 23, 2020. The company will release each episode in the season on a weekly basis; viewers will get access to the latest episode every Thursday on CBS All Access in the United States.

Star Trek: Picard is the latest example of an original series that will be made available exclusively on a single streaming platform. Disney, Hulu, Amazon, and others have all launched their own originals as a way to draw in new subscribers. Notably, Disney is planning to release a Star Wars original called The Mandalorian on its Disney+ platform next month with a few other shows set in that universe planned for future releases.
