Splatoon 2 reviews seem to agree: You will probably love Switch's latest game

We've got a few more days until Splatoon 2 releases, but early reviews of Nintendo's latest first-party game have started going live today. Splatoon 2, for those who need an introduction, is the follow-up to the Wii U title that started the series. Given the Wii U's rather poor sales performance, not many people got to play the original Splatoon, but in looking at some of these reviews, it's clear that Switch owners will want to pick this up.

At the moment, Splatoon 2 is sitting at a very healthy 84 out of 100 score on Metacritic. We'll likely see the score fluctuate a bit over the next few days as more reviews go live, but it's worth noting that 46 reviews are already counted in Metacritic's aggregated score. To land an 84 with that many reviews considered is certainly no small task.

In fact, Splatoon 2 is already beating the Metascore of its predecessor. The original Splatoon managed an 81 out of 100 – still a great score, but a few points shy of the ranking Splatoon 2 currently has. So, are we to take that to mean that Splatoon 2 is decidedly better than the original? Maybe not.

If there's a general theme to many of these reviews, it's that Splatoon 2 simply offers more of the same on a platform that suits it well. If you enjoyed the first Splatoon on the Wii U, you'll probably like Splatoon 2 just as much – especially if the portability factor of the Switch is appealing to you. The same goes for those of you who never played the original Splatoon but enjoy team-based shooters; if you count yourself in that camp, you can most likely pick this game up with confidence.

However, if you didn't like the original Splatoon, there probably isn't much for you here because it doesn't seem like Splatoon 2 does anything to significantly shake up the formula. With Splatoon 2 launching on Friday for $60, what are your plans? Are you picking it up, or isn't it your cup of tea? Head down to the comments section and let us know!
