SoundCloud Go+ premium subscription finally gets student discount

Audio platform SoundCloud, popular destination for amateur musicians around the world, has finally added a student discount. The lower rate is offered exclusively to eligible students who sign up for the company's SoundCloud Go+ service, mirroring the reduced rates other competing services offer to customers actively attending a higher education institution.

Though SoundCloud itself is a free service, customers must pay to get the premium perks available through SoundCloud Go+. Those subscriber benefits include no advertisements or previews and the ability to save music for offline access. The subscription service typically costs $9.99/month.

In an announcement this week, SoundCloud revealed that students can now sign up for the Go+ service at a rate of $4.99/month, which is 50-percent off the regular cost. Students paying the lower fee still get access to all of the regular SoundCloud Go+ perks, including exclusive content.

As we'd expect, the company requires students to be verified before they get the special pricing. The lower rate is only offered to students attending a Title IV degree-granting college or university; they must be enrolled at the school. Verification is achieved through a third-party service called SheerID.

Upon enrolling and being verified, students will receive access for up to 12 months even if they leave school during that time. These individuals will simply no longer qualify for the discount once its time to renew the subscription and undergo re-verification.
