Sony Xperia Z2 specifications show 5.2-inch display, 20.7 MP camera, 4K video

With the Sony Xperia Z2, the company is bringing on a smartphone with some early heat in the 2014 hero phone race. This device works with upgrades to each of the key elements in the smartphone experience, including a larger display than in the original Z, a more powerful camera, and the newest in new Qualcomm processors to back it up. This device is also – of course – waterproof.

Users will be rolling with a 5.2-inch Full HD (that's 1080p) display with Triluminous technology as well as Sony's own Live Color LED powered by X-Reality for mobile. For all of that brand jargon to make sense we're going to need to bring you a full hands-on experience, of course – that'll be coming immediately if not soon.

It'll be coming soon because when this article is released, we're already in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2014. Here we'll have all the hands-on action you can handle all week long.

This device works with what Sony suggests is the "world's best camera and camcorder in a waterproof smartphone", and at the moment we can't refute it – not until – again – we get our hands on it. For now you can rest easy knowing you've got a 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor as well as a Bionz for mobile image processing engine to keep it in fine imagery.

This camera works with a G Lens and the ability to capture 4K resolution video, as well. You'll be rolling with SteadyShot technology for smooth video capture and a number of Sony-unique camera apps. Sony suggests that Timeshift video and a "new AR effect" set of features are ones we're going to want to check out.

In the Sony Xperia Z2 we've got what Sony says is the "world's first smartphone with digital noise-canceling technology." This means you'll have smooth, clear audio for Sony's own applications – we'll be checking this out closely once we get our hands on the device as well.

Under the hood you've got the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor. This processor includes four 2.3GHz Krait CPUs inside, Adreno 330 GPU, and the ability to connect with 4G LTE. This processor will be drawing from 3GB of RAM for all the top next-generation apps, while it'll be utilizing Qualcomm's energy-saving abilities alongside a 3200mAh battery to keep you powered up for the long haul.

The Sony Xperia Z2 will be launching in March of 2014 globally. We'll have pricing and more exact release details as soon as possible, and will be sharing the lot as soon as we know.
