Sony Xperia Tablet Z gets successful Ubuntu Touch port

The Ubuntu Edge didn't get funded, therefore we may not see the powerful Ubuntu-powered phone get created, but that doesn't mean we can't use the Ubuntu Touch interface on a mobile device. The Linux-based mobile operating system has been successfully ported to the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, in which owners can now play around with Ubuntu on their tablet.

The port is definitely an experimental version at this point, but most features are working, including WiFi and the camera. However, there are still quite a few bugs and video is working currently. Anyone can get a hold of the port and install it on their Xperia Tablet Z, but it's essential to know that you do so at your own risk, and make sure to back up your files before you dive deep.

The port also includes the ability to dual-boot CyanogenMod, which is definitely a nice touch and allows users to switch between Linux and Android when they get bored with the other — a great way to spice up your mobile artillery. This is similar to the Ubuntu Edge, which would've been able to dual-boot Ubuntu and Android.

The Ubuntu Edge missed its lofty $32 million goal by a long shot, but it still was able to raise almost $13 million. Of course, they didn't get to keep the funds, and had to return the money to the backers, but it was still great to see what the campaign was capable of raising, making it the highest-funded crowdfunding campaign ever.
