Sony VAIO Tap 9.9mm-thick Windows 8 tablet hands-on

It's the thinnest Windows 8 tablet, Sony claims, and we can't argue that the Sony VAIO Tap is certainly a slender little slate. Launched at IFA 2013 today, the 11.6-inch tablet is 9.9mm thick without its magnetically-attached keyboard cover, and also comes with a digital stylus.

Inside, there's an Intel Core processor and SSD storage, though Sony isn't confirming final specs quite yet. The Full HD touchscreen looks great, and optionally uses Sony's X-Reality mobile processing and TRILUMINOS Display technology for boosting colors.

Sony uses an active digitizer for the handwriting recognition, and there's an 8-megapixel Exmor RS for PC camera on the back as well as a front-facing webcam. NFC also makes an appearance, which Sony suggesting it could be used to quickly pair the tablet with a set of wireless speakers.

Sony VAIO Tap hands-on:

If you've got a BRAVIA TV, the VAIO Tap will work as a second screen, taking on not only infotainment features – such as showing biography details of the actors on-screen – but working as a remote control thanks to an IR blaster.

The wireless keyboard, which has fair travel given the ultra-slim dimensions, charges whenever it's attached to the slate.

The Sony VAIO Tab will go on sale this fall. Pricing is yet to be confirmed.
