Sony S1 renamed Tablet S, launching mid-September

More details are surfacing on Sony's first Android tablets now that we're getting closer to launch time. Despite several teaser videos and some hands-on time with the tablets, very few details have been revealed. But Engadget now has word that the larger of the two Sony tablets, codenamed the S1, will be officially named the Tablet S and is set to launch within the first two weeks of September.

The Sony Tablet S features a 9.4-inch 1280x768 screen and will come running Android 3.1 Honeycomb. The key features for the tablet are focused on its integration with home entertainment, such as being able to control home theater devices via the integrated IR blaster, similar to what's available on the Vizio Tablet. However, the Sony Tablet S also offers the ability to "Throw" media to other DLNA-compatible hardware.

The Tablet S will have a front-facing 3-megapixel camera with a rear=facing 5-megapixel camera as well as various accessories such as a wireless keyboard and dock and connector dongles. It will also be PlayStation Certified meaning it has access to console quality gaming in addition to music, movies, and books. Pricing, however, is still uncertain although the number $599 has been brought up before.
