Sony FDR-X3000R action camera rocks optical image stabilization and 4K resolution

Sony rolled out a new action camera that sounds on paper as if it might be one of the best action cameras on the market right now. It has some very cool features like Balanced Optical SteadyShot (B.O.SS) image stabilization to help take some of the shake out of the videos you record. That image stabilization works even at 4K resolution and in high-speed recording modes.

This is the first time that the B.O.SS image stabilization tech from Sony has found its way into an action camera. The X3000R can be mounted on a bike or a car or held in the hand with a range of optional accessories to make using the camera easier in different situations. The camera has the Live-View Remote that is 30% smaller than previous version and can be mounted to handlebars using an optional mount and the supplied mount adapter.

The Live-View Remote can be worn like a watch and allows users to control shooting settings such as power and start/stop. The camera can also be controlled via a smartphone or a tablet with the PlayMemories Mobile app. X3000R users can also use the camera to capture 8.3MP interval recording shots while they are recording 4K time-lapse videos. Video can be edited using the free Action Cam Movie Creator PC software.

Sony integrates a BIONZ X processor, the same processor used in the Sony a7 camera, but that processor is optimized for use in the action camera. The image sensor and processor work together to enable full pixel readout without pixel binning which means better colors and reduced "jaggie" effects in the video. 4k recordings can be captured at 100Mbps with full HD at 50Mbps in XAVC S format. The stereo mic also has Wind Noise Reduction for improved audio. The camera can be used with an underwater housing making it able to survive at up to 60m depths. The FDR-X3000R will ship in November at a price of €600.
